hey everybody welcome to another edition of calling all devs our weekly Q&A series where I take questions from you the star citizen backer and pose them directly to our star citizen developers usually over Skype and usually at odd hours the day to catch our schedules and whatnot thanks for joining us this week on the show we have somebody new to calling all the calling all Deb's newbie first step we've got LD Hilditch lead environment art person we'll find out what his title is when he answers the phone Eddie Eddie how you doing man how we doing I'm doing well what is your title now actually I am global leaves which is basically a fancy way of saying that I oversee the UK environment art studio as well as the D studio I have Leeds work with me on that but I basically make

  2. 00:01:01

sure the two the two studios are talking to each other and everything's gelling nicely together awesome well thank you for being on the show welcome to colleges so I calling on Deb's we take questions from our backers the backers vote on the questions and then we actually post them to our developers and for you I have kind of an interesting one kind of a neat one I don't know what you're gonna say I'm real curious to see how much we're gonna get at it in this one this versus question is about a crusader they want to know how far along are we on crusader have do we just have a big blob and that's it I've have we done a new work on orison what can you tell us about where we're at with crusader right now I mean in 10 I mean we're talking about two things right we're talking about crusader the gas giant and we're talking about arisen as

  3. 00:01:49

the landing zone we have an initial white box for origin laid out that was just an initial sort of ideas passed to make sure maybe the shops here this is the medical area this could be the mall an initial sort of flavor pass and layout pass forests and so we have that the bigger challenge the much much bigger challenges Crusader itself as a gas giant it is very challenging from the technical point of view to get a gas giant that works from orbit all the way down to essentially the surface when you have nothing concrete to put your feet on the graphics team are working currently on the gas cloud tech where

  4. 00:02:38

Crusader comes from it will probably be born from that tech we're not at a stage yet where we can create an entire planet with that tech but it's coming at some point I mean I have personally just as a little sort of experiment taking some early casick I'll take that they've been looking at on the squadron 42 side of things I've put the white box origin that we have and I've stuck it onto the side of crusader just as a little test yeah it looks pretty good even in a sort of rough state you can see the potential of having this floating city essentially like and it's very nice to fly around with the gas clouds being all this sort of beautiful soft volumetric stuff it's

  5. 00:03:27

it's very satisfying but also incredibly rough right now so we're not going to show any of that yes of course folks can follow along with the RSI roadmap that's available on Roberts page calm you'll notice that now that it goes out to quarter 1 2019 Crusader is not on the roadmap yet it is still very early days in its development but it's a it's a it's a it's a planet that's uh maybe a little close to my heart with Cloud City and Lando and help me forget in there we'll get in there we're gonna we're gonna achieve that I have that I have absolutely no doubt alright Eddie thank you so much I'll let you get back to work man pleasure thank you okay alright thank you so much Eddie moving just a couple rows down the office we are going to designer John

  6. 00:04:18

Aegis ileus in Manchester United Kingdom Johnny how you doing man I'm great thanks Jared how are you I'm doing well now I said a couple rows are you all the same floors Eddie Hill that sure you want a different fly no we got like multiple floors you you know what I think I think I'm on a different floor now yeah we're still a top of the tower at the moment I think they're down on floor one gotcha I get moved around so much it's really difficult for track for one yeah do you guys have a floor zero and I thought it's a big bone it has to pick with you guys in the UK like you start with zero yes but you've counted before right let's count to ten what's the first number you say so you start the bottom and then you go one two yes no way but when you start counting when you start counting you start with one the first of

  7. 00:05:05

ground floor is the first floor the crumbs the starting point yes button you start with one counted I did I did land rules these are just the rules are followed with Europe it's not alright it's that in English breakfast don't get me started alright I got a question for you John II know a lot this is a question submitted by backers voted on by backers who says with Hurston having oceans as they first saw at Gamescom 2017 what will be the first iteration of water interaction now it might be a little soon I think they're asking are we gonna have swimming or ships gonna be able to fly around underwater what's our thinking right now so I guess

  8. 00:05:54

I can kind of talk her a little bit from the FPS side or the kind of first-person experience and yes you will be able to swim eventually so with the first iteration of her stand who knows if swimming will be ready by then it's a brand new locomotion set which is obviously a lot of work for our guys and at the moment our kind of priorities are on improving our existing animation sets so we're actually doing a lot of work right right the second happening right now we're improving some of our animation sets and our locomotion feel and everything so yeah a big priority at the moment is to improve the existing things we've got before we move on to things like swimming so yeah like short answer is like yeah I guess we will eventually be able to swim but who knows who knows

  9. 00:06:42

when that will be done it's definitely on our radar though yeah I think it's fair to say that it's not someone's gonna hold up the release of Hurston basically I mean it's right right now it's a little too early to say where ever is where you know you've got multiple Sprint's going who's gonna finish who's not gonna finish what not but we're not gonna hold up her stand if swimming isn't done and ready kind of thing so basically it remains to be seen this TBD put a pin in it whether you'll be able to swim on her stand is first introduced into star citizen but it's possible and either way you'll eventually be able to do it for certain yep another one just follow the public roadmap as far as the ship question I will tell you that I talk I talk I talk to Todd peppy on the side and he said he

  10. 00:07:32

said don't talk to me about ships flying underwater right now so that's probably even farther back requires a bit more thought I can't say yes swimming is something you can do yeah ships flowing under what I yeah I would definitely not want to talk about yet at this point a you guys know about as much as we do about how ships are gonna function underwater at that point all right Thank You Johnny I'll let you get back to work thank you again so much no problem Thank You papa me I take care everyone all right thanks so much John Aegis obvious now we move farther down the farther down the block there and go to Rob Johnson lead gameplay programmer out of foundry 42 UK Rob how you doing man hi Jared I'm good how are you I'm done well thank you for taking the time to take the call man any

  11. 00:08:19

time I think don't don't say that that's dangerous that's dangerous oh there there are people that have been on this show like ten times that's John at any time once every six months left so I got a question for you this is submitted by the backers this is voted on by the backers your question says I want to leave port olisar and never ever return can we please get ship bed lockouts working right right well okay well mines that would be yen you can't potentially for all us our and not respawn there firstly even without using the ship that logout just as we've got to say at the moment you should be able to fly it ships to other landing landing areas which have been respawn rooms for rare players such as like grim

  12. 00:09:13

hacks for example if you request the landing through the air traffic control land correctly at those areas then you should respawn at them so potentially then if you don't like Alice I don't have to travel back there and respawn there and so firstly you've got a mechanic to do that and secondly the bad log outs yeah I do tend to get the bugs myself for that feature and through yeah we've been looking at a couple of the we looked at a couple of books for 3/1 so hopefully it's a little bit better than whilst when it first came in in 3-0 and also put in the crash recovery system and one which is although not directly related to bad hopefully sort of

  13. 00:10:03

improves the respawn experience and persistence falling in as a feature as a whole so for three two we will be looking at and improving the feature further and actually got meeting today to discuss a little bit what am what we may or may not look like it doing for that patch I mean spawning as a whole is just it's something that's kind of evolved over several of the patches you know I can remember back to when you were criminal your format we got putting grim hex so so as to like when the feature is final it'll probably so so much that I always evolve over time because they're looking to give you guys the best experience possible when it comes to spawn in and so I guess

  14. 00:10:53

watch this space but their improvements it is on the radar amongst many many other things but yeah it certainly it's certainly something that we're looking to improve on yeah that's a good it's a good reminder Rob yeah every star citizen environment is a test environment whether it's the the evocati or it's the PTO or even our live the live alpha environment which is a testing environment you're gonna see these features continue to iterate continue to improve each and every patch and you can do your part on the issue council if you're having a particular issue with longing out onto the beds and one and you can reproduce it use the issue council let us know find other people's issue council issues and vote them up confirm them up help us identify

  15. 00:11:41

these things and work on these things and make this better for everybody so thank you rob I'll let you get back to work man thanks Jared congratulations on your first calling out that so you did it bye thank you bye alright thank you so much Rob Johnson now moving back here to our Los Angeles studio we've got a call for Kirk Tomei lead technical designer here in Los Angeles Kirk how you doing man hey Jared good okay so I'm doing well thank you for asking nobody ever asks how Jared's doing why they get there right lead technical designer that's great okay if it's not how to pronounce names its what everybody's title is I've gone through a number of titles myself alright so I got a question from you from the backers voted on from the backers has to do with ship security specifically internal

  16. 00:12:30

scanning this this backer wants to and all the backers of voting I want to know will we ever be able to scan our for like internal life signs like to see if there are any intruders aboard okay well I can't answer that directly but I can talk about why perhaps you chose me to answer this question so right now the vehicle features team is working on scanning specifically radar scanning ping and and scanning for the items that you find beeping so the system were looking on is specifically for finding surface my nipple areas on planets and asteroids that way you can gather these sources for our future mighty mechanic in that regard you could be able to a ping that

  17. 00:13:20

gives you back some vague info about like where potential targets may be and then when as get closer to them those targets resolve and then you could actually do a focus scan on those targets that you pick up and then get back info so you'll get stuff like you know these particular mineral deposits or like these metal deposits are here and are you interested in getting that that will become the basis for the overall system in which you could do things like you can scan ships and go hey what kind of ship is that is that friendly what manufacturer is it who owns it who's on it so life-forms will be one thing that we'll eventually be able to get along with that I not sure if this particular team will be working on a system for security for ships but if it does I think the future of security will involve something in which

  18. 00:14:10

you could do like a self scan and then you'll get back the same type of resolution for info about exactly what my phones measure so you can get back info about down like if you do a good short run perhaps you'll get there for about the number of life-forms are on it then as you continue scanning you'll get info about exactly who what you know what the actual individuals are and then you could go to the list and maybe compare against the manifest and figure out hey there is a bad guy on this ship but but it sent security down to get rid of them and then you know I think from there once we get that mechanic establish we'll be able do things like and how do you feel that system maybe you have some kind of stealthy armor or you could disable the internal scanner that's on the ship to make it impossible to do scanning which are kind of like

  19. 00:14:57

maybe giveaway that that you are stowing away down the ship but yeah might be something that might probably be fun for players to be able to do by some say hotwire a car in that case and so to make a shorter version of that I think what will do is that will basically give you this ability to do the same type of like manifest information resolution on your own ship that you would normally do from your ship to other targets and then give you back some kind of info for that so you can you can determine whether you have something that's on board that you may don't want I just love scanning for life forms life forms tiny no Star Trek generations no all right wait until you

  20. 00:15:53

I was like waiting for like seven minutes until you stop talking to do that joke I had if just all I was thinking about I wasn't even listening what you were saying obviously stop talking so I can do my life forms joke I'm kidding thank you so much Greg as always you deliver far more than I ever ask of you so I appreciate that sure no problem all right I'll let you get back to work thank you all right thank you so much and now last but certainly not least we go to Austin Texas and our very own Rob Reiner ger who's I got a question for him and that I think is a lot of you are gonna I'm gonna be pleased with let's see what he's got it what's up Jerry and what do you got for me hey Rob welcome back to be a regular parents here yeah you're not you're not almost you're climbing the ranks that you're climbing the ranks you'll catch

  21. 00:16:40

John crew you need any time now alright so for our last question the show we've got are there any short or medium-term plans to put orbital markers above major landing zones so that you can jump straight to the beginning of some standard approach rather than having to fly hundreds of kilometres yeah so I've actually got an email let me dig it up real quick that I can share cuz we're proposing a couple different solutions that we're exploring right now for this so it kind of helped explain so this this right here is kind of what we got at the moment where we've got our our six you know car no direction exactly now points around a planet right so you have to go to one of these points and then conventional

  22. 00:17:28

travel down to the surface which is you know not always a short flight right so one of the ideas is to have some sort of dynamically generated mesh around the planet that would create now points you know like at these green dots here on the on the mesh where you could you know quantum travel to a point that's closer right so you call them travel to a planet and then you could do another short hop once you're in the the sphere of influence of the planet down to a location that's closer and and as you know as the planet scales up you can see on the right here like that the mesh would you know increase in density so that the the maximum you know distance down to any given point on a planet

  23. 00:18:18

would be fairly consistent amount of flight time but another option that we've been kind of exploring is you know say you say you've got let's key here and then you've got left he's atmosphere cuz you're not gonna be able to quantum travel through atmosphere that's definite right never gonna happen right but what we would do is we would put the arrival radius of Levski up in into orbit so that as you are say on the far side of the planet you would be able to target Levski and then we would spline you know create a spline to the orbital you know intersection above the atmosphere and then that would allow you to still have your angular approach you know descent down to the planet's

  24. 00:19:05

surface because that's something that you know we did we don't want to nosedive you know down to the planet but but this is this is you know some of the stuff that you know we're kind of exploring here so we're definitely working on a few different solutions that that you know we're going to see which way Sierra wants to go on this but yeah we've definitely got some stuff in progress because we know it's it's an issue that you know nobody wants a ten minute travel time and outpost but we thought it'd be really cool to be able to you know pick any you know you also got to keep in mind that you're not gonna know about every location on a planet so we're still probably gonna have even if we have this blind you know solution we're still gonna have to have the cardinal markers because you're

  25. 00:19:52

gonna need to scan for locations and and you know you'll know about major cities but you know you won't know about all the outposts so you're still gonna need to get around it to a certain degree and whether or not that's the orbital you know the cardinal markers or some finer you know distribution of now points that's still kind of undecided at this point can't you well that sounds very cool I love the idea this fine thing I do want to reiterate of course that no decision has been made on this obviously obviously I saw the time step on the email it's just a couple minutes ago when you said you you just you just got an email that was this all this has been going back yeah it's it's it's in discussion and we're we're trying to pitch a few different solutions and it's just what we can fit within the time

  26. 00:20:42

that we have four three two here because this is something that we definitely want to make better four three two that's quantum travel improvements in general is something that we're focused on right now okay so so for folks watching home I would say stay tuned as we get closer and closer to the release of three - well we'll follow back up with Rob we'll see we'll see which wait which path no pun intended we we intend to go on whether it's one of the two we discussed today or whether it's a third option altogether in fact I think there's actually going to be a feature at at some point on the quantum travel and their quantum linking and then some of the additional quantum travel improvements somewhere towards you know the the three to release date so I know that's what I was that's what I was saying it's coming take it easy man take it easy take care

  27. 00:21:35

thanks yeah well that about wraps up this week's show special thanks to Eddie Hilditch and Johnny to Sevilla sand Rob Johnson and Kirk Tomei and finally Rob Reiner girl for taking the time to appear on the show with us remember you can submit your questions for consideration each and every week up on the thread up on spectrum and don't forget to vote that's the two-prong plan I'm here every week I say the same thing you got to submit your questions you got a bunch of questions and a special note on that if you if you're wondering like hey I submitted a question and it got deleted all right so don't question it got a lot of votes and it got deleted think about the content of that question remember the posting rules one question per post if yeah if you ask hey what about this in level of oh no how's this work also what about this and they're not related they you're accumulating votes for two different topics and that's cheating so that's why that

  28. 00:22:23

that's almost always why that post got deleted so please follow the posting guides guidelines please keep it to one question per post so that you'd so that you can't skewer the votes among everybody else so for calling all devs I'm Content Manager for global video production Jared Huckaby we'll see you next week everybody thanks for watching for the latest and greatest in star citizen squadron 42 you can subscribe to our Channel or you can check out some of the other shows and you can also head to our website at www.uvu.edu/library
