Hello everybody. Welcome to another edition of Star Citizen Live Game Dev Alien Encounter. I'm your host Jared Huckaby and if you've never seen a Star Citizen Live Game Dev before, it's where we take about an hour out of our week and we make something, we create something, we work on something, we demonstrate the talents and skills and aptitudes of some of our developers for an hour with input from you, the Star Citizen viewer who's joining us now. On the show this week is a no stranger to Star Citizen Live. Let's take a Let's take a Let's introduce him now. Jeremiah. How you doing? Hey all. I'm doing good. It's a Jared and Jeremiah I'm back again. I know this is the Considering that we try to keep them to about two, three a year, this is

  2. 00:00:50

probably your last one for 2021. No. Yeah. People want me, Jared. No, we've got the whole rest of the year scheduled out and you're not on it, man. So this is it. No, no, no, no. The people must get what they want, which is me. Remember I said this before. I am Star Citizen. No, uh for folks who don't know how most of this stuff works, Jeremiah is my backfill when somebody cancels at the last minute. I often come to Jeremiah and I'm like, "Please, please help me do a show this week." And and he is always such a good sport. But today is a scheduled show, an intentional show. This is our Alien Week show which kicks off today. If you saw Inside Star Citizen yesterday, you saw the introduction of the Gatac Railen as well as a nice primer of all of our alien cultures. And then today on the

  3. 00:01:37

robertsspaceindustries.com website, Alien Week kicks off in earnest with all kinds of promotions and activities for people to participate in. My personal favorite is the baking contest that I think I think our first one was last year and I believe it's back this year. Like that's all I cared about. I'm like, "Are you doing the baking contest again?" Because I don't know, some of those like there was this Banu cake from last year that was just amazing personally. Um today on today's show we are going to be creating an alien race. Now, not an alien race like the Banu or the Tevarin or the Xi'an or the Vanduul that that will actually one day populate our Star Citizen universe. We are creating a race within the fiction of our universe. Now, I'll

  4. 00:02:25

explain that that distinction right now. Imagine like in our world today we have Alien and Predator and and you what I mean you know the the the these these popular pop culture aliens that exist in our movies and our TV shows and our comic books and stuff like that. We are going to create one of those within Star Citizen's universe. So, what would a fictional alien race be like for for humanity that has actually met aliens? And as we do this, we'll have several questions that we'll put up as polls throughout the show. So, if you're watching live on Twitch right now, you'll have the opportunity to vote in the chat. And we have our first vote right now. Actually, we're going to get started because one of these things we need to know right away before Jeremiah can

  5. 00:03:13

really get started. Uh I'm sure most people have noticed that most of the alien races in Star Citizen have have a have a sort of animal basis to them. The Tevarin are very avian. The the the Banu are turtles? Would you say? The Banu? No, not the Banu. Which one is the turtle the turtle one? the Xi'an. Xi'an are the turtles ones. What did I just say? ones. I know. Anyway, they're all based on things. Forget forget to mention I'm still in I'm still in music mode right now. Uh so, we are looking for a animal reference right now. Uh it's just a starting point. It's just a jumping off point. It's not necessarily going to, you know, look like an anthropomorphic animal when we're done, but um uh as predicted, Jeremiah, uh we're going to let this go on for a little bit

  6. 00:04:00

longer, but as predicted, sloths Sloths. the the sloths are running away with the with the thing. I'm going I'm going to put up your little reference board right now and show that you had absolutely no sloths No. on this reference board. forgot about sloths. I made this board. Jeremiah put together this whole reference board and completely forgot sloths. Well, we're we're we're on there as the option, so there we go. We got we got one. We got one bad boy on there. And also snakes. I totally forgot snakes. Oh, boy. You were the one who came up with these options. Yes. Hey hey, don't don't point at my weaknesses, Jared. It doesn't like being looked at. Now, who's got that kind of time? Cuz there's something about me. I

  7. 00:04:47

already have a full-time job. You You know what's not a weakness? Your beautiful singing voice. Oh my gosh. All right, so let's see. Gorillas, snakes, sloths, canines, bats. Uh I think we can probably call it here. It it's I don't see any one of these catching up to the formidable lead that sloths have. Yeah, 42% of the vote. At at at a five. That That is that is a Sloths. That is a runaway win right there. Uh CNN is ready to pre- predict uh sloths as the next fictional alien race uh for Star Citizen. Okay. Okay.

  8. 00:05:34

So, Sloths. So, with that as a starting point, where do we go from here, Jeremiah? Okay, cool. Um so, normally uh I thought about kind of like what processes we've shown on the Star Citizen Lives and I think we've shown the base I've done the line drawing stuff. I've drawn I've done the silhouette stuff. Josh Herman did some ZBrush stuff long time ago. And like the like the like the dog the Vanduul dog and also the spider. We don't speak of We don't talk about the Vanduul dog or the spider. Yeah, and we've also done like another alien sculpt. I know was it a I think it was a

  9. 00:06:23

Banu armor or clothing sculpt. I think we've done that before I believe. And so I come from kind of a film background and one thing that we haven't shown yet is a VFX or like makeup pass which is kind of like the portrait bust shots which is a completely different style that we've never shown on Star Citizen Live before. So, it's a lot of photo manipulation and then a lot of paint over. But it's a very very quick and dirty way to make things look very photorealistic but you get that point across and it's very very exciting to see and also there is a lot of trolley bits in the beginning. And so I will be taking everybody here in that process. So, normally what I do is my is my screen shared right now?

  10. 00:07:12

So, normally what I do before I jump into that is well, first like always say get a whole bunch of references and bunch of images. And so what I'm going to do is I'm going to take the sloth as a major influence but then start incorporating other elements of different creatures from nature and mix that in so that we don't get just a sloth in a shirt, right? Because they have to look different. So, once I have those reference images I tend to I look for a an image of a of an actual person. Um and legally I can use Jared's pretty face so we can turn Jared into an alien. Um and what I'll do is I'll start to push and pull shapes of the face um to conform into a lot of the shapes that we want to um

  11. 00:08:01

How do you say? Uh turn in turn alien? I guess. Uh English. English Let me pick a nice picture where I was like 50 lb lighter. Yeah, I know. It's It's summer time, Jared. want you want a shock. Look at that. That's not What happened? I think we'll just stay here. Nobody needs to be that close to me. No, that that's too close. Uh what do you mean? It's not close enough. Uh anyways, okay. So, let's let's start the process. So, I also have on my second monitor I have the reference board that I that we just made so there's something that you guys don't see. Um but what I'm what I'm going to do now is actually go into for those of you guys if you want to know how I get here. Uh oh shoot.

  12. 00:08:49

I just swore. I didn't catch it so it doesn't count. Oh, it doesn't count. So, I normally go to the filter and liquefy. So, liquefy is a very powerful tool that I use quite frequently uh to give notes to uh um the the the character artists and concept artists here but also for photo manipulation as well. So, um what we do know is for sloths is that their eyes are a little bit more kind of like uh spaced out to the side. So, this will this will start to look very strange and very trolly. Uh and as trolly as I am I'm doing this these things on purpose so I know a lot of you guys will think that oh this is time for Jared to mess around. Um but all of this will make sense in a bit. So, there's going to be a lot

  13. 00:09:38

of weird images on the internet. I'm so sorry, Jared. But, like this is I I I I know what I'm doing. I promise. I swear I know what I'm doing. This is going to end up on my Wikipedia page. Probably. Probably. Uh but, this is always the the funniest part of the process. Um and uh Let's see. A another question that I kind of would like um can we put up another one? Did we Did we talk about like um if they were like what type of Another thing I think I made a request was for like are they militant? Are they peaceful? Um What kind of attitude? Attitude, yeah. Cuz that that will kind of define

  14. 00:10:28

um at least visually, as an artist I would like to know what the um Are they like gentle? Are they aggressive? Um are they combat oriented? Uh or are they like you know what I mean? So, that If they're more combat, I'll make things a little bit more squared out. Um cuz they they would work out a lot more and be more active compared in possibly comparison to like some a race that's more like gentle and political. So, we probably bring in some soft features. The vote is up right now. The choices are friendly, villainous, militant, diplomatic, and curious. So, right now sloths tend to look a

  15. 00:11:17

little bit more curious and friendly. So, I'm kind of working more towards that direction right now. That is the frontrunner in the voting as well. Curious. Okay, interesting. We'll let it keep going. um from what I do know, firm's law know what a villainous disco is. I'm like, I'm I don't I look quite villainous? I'm like, where where's my villainous face on? Yeah, it's clearly running away with S You look so beautiful.

  16. 00:12:08

Oh, man. By the way, I did not share tell Jared what my process was going to be. no, I I didn't. It's less you think less any of you think we plot this stuff out, we absolutely do not. Jeremiah and I we came up with the five questions like nine weeks ago and then I've not talked about this since until about five minutes beforehand. And so I I I don't ever know this stuff is coming. I mean, I can expect it. I mean, you have to expect it. I've been doing this for seven years now. You have to expect it, but still How do you expect this? You don't. How do you expect this? Well, this is actually a process that a lot of concept artists do take in games and film.

  17. 00:12:57

Um so, this is actually stuff that you guys Um I had to pay $3,000 to take a class to teach me this stuff and you guys are getting it for Is there a way to truly get your money back? No, trust me, it's going to be worth it at least for me. At the end of the day. Okay. This is where you get a terrible new remote. All right. I I just realized I was I was like, this is going to show up on my Wikipedia page, but I just realized worse, it's going to show up as a Twitch emote somewhere. Oh, probably. Probably. You look so beautiful. and let's do a second one. Uh and I'm going to start incorporating different parts of different proportions

  18. 00:13:45

and different shapes of different creatures here to mix in with the uh with our with our sloth. So, the sloth still has to be the the the prominent feature on here. Okay. Make it your LinkedIn profile. I actually don't have a LinkedIn. Like I like there's a page that exists for me because other people have like created one, but I don't have a LinkedIn page. So. Uh I'm going to bring in a little bit more primate shapes in here. Also, like kind of like a key a key note that I'd like to bring in uh for a lot of creature designs um and I spoke with a lot of my colleagues

  19. 00:14:33

in the industry about how to make alien creatures relevant or like not so jarring that it's so um how do you say? Um not so jarring for the viewers is actually bringing in a little bit of uh primate shapes or human features uh to make things look a little bit more relatable. This is This is like This is your worst nightmare coming true. Dr. Seuss had a baby. This is my favorite part of this process. But trust me, this is going to look really cool at the end, but it's just this part that gets really trolly. As trolly as I am, I'm actually doing

  20. 00:15:22

this like legit seriously right now. Yeah, I I that's that's that's that's the thing. I can I've seen witnessed him do this process before legitimately for other aliens. So, I I I know this is not something intentional he's he's doing just like intentional. Well, I mean it's intentional that you've chosen me as the basis of this, but I mean I I'm pretty sure at the end of the last stream we agreed that we were going to use Todd Pappy for this from now on. I thought about it. I was going to do Ian Leyland. It's very close. I I I distinctly remember us as as coming to the decision that we were going to use Todd Pappy for this stuff from now on. Cuz he was so pretty. Yes, but but he's too pretty to be an alien. All right, so how did Dr. Seuss

  21. 00:16:10

have a liquefy tool decades before liquefy existed? Like if anything, this is this is just showing me how incredibly talented Dr. Seuss was that he did that he did this without Photoshop. Should do Chris Roberts? Yeah, I yeah. No, I like my job. my job. I would Like I like like like like we'll do we'll we'll do we'll do a we'll do a lot of things to to push the limits like like we'll we'll we'll we'll we'll do no scrubs during the uh Yeah. uh pre-show, but uh But no, not this. Not not no. No. Yeah. No. I I I'd like to continue working on the

  22. 00:17:03

the best damn space sim mankind has ever seen. I'm known to be pretty trolly of of of Chris Roberts. There At least when we were all still in the studio together. You know, many was the time where you know, I'd I'd walk past his office dressed in a shark costume or a or something or other and just, you know, troll the heck out of him. Oh, [ __ ] That's not what I want to do. That's private and within the studio. Okay. I remember one time Do you remember that that episode one Star Wars episode one Jar Jar like lollipop sucker thing where Jar Jar's head opened and his tongue came out and you were supposed to suck on his I I That That was the That was the sucker.

  23. 00:17:49

Do you remember that one of the most worst pieces of It was one of the worst pieces of movie merchandise that's ever been ever been created. And I offered one to Chris Roberts once. the look on his face like you offer you offer Chris Roberts a Jar Jar Binks sucker that's his head and then it opens up and his tongue comes out and that is the part that you're supposed to consume. I offered that to Chris Roberts once. And the look that he gave me it was like if you had to describe it, it was every decision involved in the hiring of you was a mistake. That's how I would describe it. to taste my Jar Jar? So, uh

  24. 00:18:37

we're not above trolling Chris Roberts here, but that stuff that stuff stays internal. That stuff stays in the office. It stays off the air. Uh off the airwaves. What the I looked away for like 2 seconds to tell a story. so curious. It looks so curious. It's so pretty, Tara. You have such beautiful eyes. So beautiful. Uh I feel like I'm straying away a little bit too far from the sloth look. cuz I try to incorporate and this is me incorporating a little bit of the secretary bird proportions

  25. 00:19:24

um onto the face. Um and it's looking less like a sloth and more like a At least you deemphasize my nose. What do you mean like this? Um okay, so maybe we can raise the nostrils kind of Oh, that's interesting. Okay. And let's actually uh the eyes are a lot further out. Okay, okay, okay. So, I think for Okay, I think we'll just do three. I think let's just do the three. And we'll have um

  26. 00:20:12

kind of the base onto the side. I don't want to do that. I'm going to move you to this side over here. So, we know kind of like where our journey started. That last one looks like a reject from Tim Burton's Beetlejuice. All right, let's move that to the side. All right, cool. All right, so we have three three shapes, which is one which was heavily based on the sloth. And I'll I'll apply a lot of the sloth stuff on here. Um isn't going to be an NFT. Ban whoever said that, please. Mods. Um okay, so the next thing to do um is actually it's going to look it's still a

  27. 00:21:02

little bit janky until I do the um more janky than it already is. Uh yes. Um but the things I now I'm going to incorporate a lot of photos here um to kind of play around with the anatomy. So, now since this one was based off the sloth, what I'm going to do now is take the sloth. I'm going to move it over here. And I'm going to drag a lot of feature a lot of different camera angles uh and references on here. Is there another vote that would be helpful? Um what what were one of the categories again? Uh we still have what what kind of planet environment is our alien from? oh, that would help. That would help a lot.

  28. 00:21:49

So, so so we'll start this one. People can vote on this and we'll just we'll just do this. reposition the uh the the poll a little bit so it can be better seen. Oh, there's still some on the side there. Hold on. There we go. Let's keep the poll right here. And this is a tighter race. This is a tighter race between toxic and aquatic. Oh, interesting. Then stop moving.

  29. 00:22:46

Mm. Well, I have certain I have creatures from both. So, we should be good. This this is actually getting very tight. We're going to have to let this one go for a bit. Uh Uh, there it is. Okay, this is just then this one is There. There we go. This is for the first batch. Now, I'll I'll just I'm going to start plotting Ooh, that is neck and neck. some base images here. And so, I'm going to um Also, I I'd like to preface this with like yes, I'm using photos on here. Um but this is not the final stage. Um

  30. 00:23:36

this is just for me to know kind of like what direction I can start taking a lot of these designs. And so, um if you got if there's any any of you out there that do wish to do this line of work, I'd like to preface that this is not the final stage. This is just sketching. But for this is quick sketching. So, um for the purpose of not hitting uh what do you call it? Like copyright stuff. Um there there needs to be heavy amounts of painting uh and manipulation of the original image uh for you to be able to use it legally. So, that's another another another tip. Uh but for sketching, and when this is the kind of like more internal, it doesn't really matter

  31. 00:24:22

uh cuz you're just doing it in the for for for funsies or just to kind of like find out where where you would like to see your ideas heading. So, this will be a heavily photo manipulation uh process in the beginning. Uh I might not have enough time to show the entire painting process cuz normally these these take about about a day for me. Um but it's not 1 hour. No. No, if if for for those who this is your first Star Citizen live game dev it does bear repeating that absolutely no aspect of game development

  32. 00:25:10

can be completed in an hour. In an hour, yeah. So so we are we are using an accelerated altered process here to get as close to showing you how the real thing is happen happens as possible. Wow, this is really neck and neck here toxic and aquatic. It is actually literally going back and forth. That's how close they are. Can you can we do toxic and aquatic? Does that mix? we we can. We it's it's we can do that but aquatic But sloths are pretty good swimmers. Are they? I don't know. I don't think they are. Sounded true

  33. 00:25:57

when I said it, didn't it? I don't I don't think they are. They're very slow. All right, we got 450 votes so far. We'll stop we'll 460. We'll stop at 500 because because it just keeps going back and forth. So when we get 500 unique votes we'll call it. Yeah. And see and just pick the one that's in front. Um so like also like one of the reason I I did want to also bring this up like one of the reasons why a lot of people in the industry use this process as well is like one it's quick. I don't need to draw anything from from scratch from in the sketching phase. Also you get to um play around with kind of

  34. 00:26:46

stuff that already exist in real life, right? And so it brings in that realism a little bit. So, so to me See, I'm I'm dropping the opacity here of this this this uh photo. Yeah. Guys, you vote already starting to blend. Your vote only counts once. That's why you only see the unique votes going up very slowly. Once you voted, you can't change your vote. It doesn't change. It doesn't add. You can stop typing numbers if you voted. 492, 494, 495. All right. 500 votes, aquatic is our winner. Barely. Oh, that is so close. Literally won by .6.

  35. 00:27:33

Okay. Aquatic. That changes a lot of things. Um so, I can't use a lot of this fur that I've been on here. No, no, no, no, no. Sea otters. Uh okay. Aquatic things can have fur. Sure. So, like is it like mainly in in water or Well, that was just the kind of environment. You know, we we said it's an aquatic environment that it's from. But like just like I said, sea otters and stuff, there are things that that go on both land and water. And so, it so it can still have fur. Okay. You just have to imagine what it's going to look like wet. Okay. So, I'm going to incorporate some things here. I would I would much rather would have rather been a sea otter. But I think uh that would have been a

  36. 00:28:21

lot better. Um but But I didn't realize you were going to use me as a I mean, I I expected to be on your reference sheet because that's what you normally do. I didn't think I was going to be the basis of this thing. I mean, like I normally just mess with with your pic like your pictures on images. I but I I was like, "No, I'll make your image as a base." I was like, "How can I you know, take it take it up a notch?" And I was like, "Oh, this process, I remember. I remember you. And so, okay, let's take a little bit of this. where is it? This image right here. I'm going to Um so, aquatic and curious, right?

  37. 00:29:13

Yeah. I think curious was a personality. Okay, so I was going to put that eye that like a I I want to add a little bit more eyes on this on this creature. but I don't want to put it too close to the center because of those are more of pre- like predators. Mhm. They they tend to have like in in nature a lot of um predatory creatures will have eyes in the in the front. So so they can uh for depth perception. And they can hone in on their targets a lot more. while um herbivores or more of the prey type of creatures have have their eyes on the side to be more for spatial awareness. so since these guys are curious

  38. 00:30:03

uh I think I'll kind of mix mix it between the two. So I don't want to do a straight-up like a herbivore. The the problem also with herbivore type of creatures is they tend to look a little bit um uh at least in the human standards anatomy-wise dumber. so Chat's asking if you're giving me four eyes. Yes, I am. Would it be six eyes because of his glasses? Sorry, that was like playground insults. I apologize. I love you, Jared. I love you. It's only cuz I went to get LASIK and

  39. 00:30:52

chickened out when they were strapping me to the table. I'm going to do one more thing here. Which is a true story. I I I I I paid for it and I went through all the pre stuff and I went and I got I all the way to the point where I was getting on the table and they were strapping me down and I was just like You chickened out. Not This is too Clockwork Orange and I Yeah, I jumped off the table. I jumped off the table and left. Did you Did you have to pay for it? Yeah, I'd already paid for it. I freaked out. gosh. I'm not a I'm not a I'm not afraid to I'm not afraid to admit it. I made a decision on that day to have glasses the rest of my life.

  40. 00:31:44

Okay, you start to look very chipmunk-y. I don't I don't have a problem with that. Um and what I'm going to do is I'm going to add just joined us and have no idea what the heck we're doing, I don't know, either. Just kidding. And I need a little bit of this. All this will make sense soon. All this will make sense soon. Okay, let's

  41. 00:32:42

So I I pretty much completely cover up the the anatomy that I made underneath. So that way like now Jared is uh unrecog- like you can't even recognize him anymore, right? But like I use his the the base image as a starting point. And then once I've placed all my images here, like I I have a general idea of of um I I have an idea of where I want to take where I want to take this. So now People have no idea that every image that's ever been created to the Van Dweller actually has Tom Selleck underneath. Uh my roommate is a lawyer, so I

  42. 00:33:34

at the second I said that I'm like, I have to disabuse that. That is not true. That was a lie. Uh I joke I was joking there. Yeah. Sorry, just Let's move that over here. Sorry, I'm setting up stuff right now for the the next part. Did I get him? No. Where's this image? There you are. The views and opinions of Jared Huckaby do not reflect those of Cloud Imperium Games, or Robert Space Industries, or its subsidiaries. I have the wolf, too. So let's move the wolf over here. So now we got

  43. 00:34:22

the general positions of stuff. Now I have a general idea of I kind of like So now it's the part where I wish I had more time. But, um I'm going to crank this up and make this look more appropriate, and I'm going to use this more as a reference point. for the the final. Actually, we might only have time for just one. What is here? Okay. So, now let's Yeah, I think I think I'm just going to focus on one. Sorry, guys. A lot of these guys will have to die out.

  44. 00:35:12

Bye, Dr. Seuss. Bye, Tim Burton. And I'm going to let's get rid of these guys. Now, what I'm what I need to do now is let's remove the a lot of the photo elements on here. So, let's first make do that. So, we'll put that over there. On top. There we go. And now I'm going to start There's already an emote in the chat. Aw, so close.

  45. 00:36:05

You're welcome, internet. Okay. I'm going to now do I ban TV liquid? I'm so proud of you. So proud of you. Okay, now let's get rid of this. Let's put Let's put him in a kind of like a like a photo shoot of environment. And now I'm going to change uh paint on top of this a little bit. Give him more Oh, uh also, wasn't there one the the this like if they were sentient and stuff like that? Wasn't that one of

  46. 00:36:52

the polls that we need to do? I'm not listening. I'm too busy hating DJ Penguin right now. I'm sorry, what did you ask? Remember like one of the I think the polls were like um if they were They're Oh, wait. They all have to be sentient, right? I think that was one of the thing that we had Yeah, yeah. You What What you had left was the alien diet, whether it was herbivore, omnivore, or uh carnivore. that. Let's do that. Let's do that. Like what do they eat? We got a carnivorous sloth creature. Maybe. I mean like it's just the the shapes that were referencing from, so like we can we can we can make them a lot more aggressive um and speedy. But I just

  47. 00:37:40

need to know cuz that that would inform the uh the the the basic anatomy. Remember folks, you only need to vote once. So now I'm just kind of getting rid of the human elements of it. It does not change your vote. It does not add your second or third vote. One number, it's all you need. Okay, so now I have this. Now I'm going to now paint on top of this and try to make sense of all this crazy shenanigans that are happening here. And also because I used photos uh a in a lot of different places. uh there the lighting information is all

  48. 00:38:28

over the place. Right. Uh because the the original photos was just taken from different times of day, different location, different camera angles, different camera focal lengths. Um so now I have to kind of um uh compensate for that and actually turn that trying to turn this into a very realistic image. So I need to lock down a um a a lighting situation. Well, omnivores run away with this one. Omnivores for this one? Yes. Oh, it's perfect. Perfect. Okay. Unlike me, I don't eat vegetables. That's right. Um this is from uh toxic environment, right? Or no, aquatic, right? Aquatic. Aquatic, okay. So omnivores, so they

  49. 00:39:21

So they eat uh I'm assuming like maybe like plankton type of stuff and Uh let's see. It's basically a sea otter is what we're doing. Uh wait, are sea otters carnivorous? No, they eat vegetation, too, don't they? Oh my god, sea otters are so cute. used the Googles for me and tell me. Uh they're the heaviest members of the weasel family. But they're the smallest marine mammal. Um and I want to I want to put like a little bit of feelers. I think most mammals are omnivores, though.

  50. 00:40:07

Yeah. They eat They eat sea They eat sea urchins, mollusks, crustaceans, and some species of fish. Awesome. So I think we're actually leaning more towards like I think the moment we said it was aquatic it became a sea otter. That's fine. This fur for a fictional thing. So, okay. I mean, look look look look how adorable this guy is. For people who are like, you can't have fur if you're an aquatic, yes you can. Look at how adorable this guy is. This is what could have been. Aren't they very also territorial?

  51. 00:41:00

Sea otters. I've never met a sea otter. I might have heard they were [ __ ] Wait, can I say that? Is that a swear word? Let me just actually bring that in a bit. they're curious. So, I think I think what you're you're you're really missing the the the thing that makes a sloth to me besides those eyes is the nose. You also have to have that nose.

  52. 00:41:50

Uh yeah, but it'll it'll look straight up like a sloth though. All right. That's right. You just want the you want you want the influence, but you don't want the The influence of it. Right, right. But, you're right though. It is looking more primate now. So, like I could don't know how I feel about that. What if we gave him an otter nose? And just deviate. He already makes magic stuff. Well, I mean, so I could actually just kind of blend between. You have 20 minutes, by the way.

  53. 00:42:38

Oh, it's That's more than enough time. We're only going to do one, so this should be pretty pretty good. and I want to draw like some basic clothing for these guys, so they look a little bit more sophisticated. So, let's do um Put him in scuba gear. Scuba gear? No, I think I think we can actually start we could plot out some some basic armor on him. Well, not not armor, I'm sorry. Like a

  54. 00:43:24

like a space suit. So, I'll just go a little darker on it. Another way you can you can deviate from the sloth is ears. And um maybe they've got like uh I'm just going to use this color right here. That's true. You never see whenever you

  55. 00:44:13

see an alien with like more than two eyes, you never see them with glasses. Cuz they have a pair of other stuff. So they don't need that. So what else did we have in the poll? We had uh All right. Oh, we just had what size, but since you're doing a bust, that doesn't really matter anymore. Yeah. That's all my questions. Okay, cool.

  56. 00:45:00

Unless you want to make up a new one. No, I think this is a very good good good good point, actually. I have a general idea over where we should take this. Um so I'm going to actually just mirror it. Yes. There's something about the right side

  57. 00:45:49

that I really like. Okay, cool. Cool. Cool. Cool. Cool. Cool. And they're curious. So, I think I'm going to make the armor not I'm going to make them a little curvy. And not so like aggressive. bevel the edges out a bit. Like it's a repurposed like shells or something from Mhm. Mhm. Mhm. under sea. Everything's got a smooth curved edge. And also having them in a kind of like cute expression definitely helps the

  58. 00:46:38

pitch. Um cuz I don't want to make them look angry. Uh cuz that would that would make things like very counterintuitive to uh if I'm pitching this to Right. uh to to Chance or um or to or to Chris. Um so, the expression does play a major factor in uh uh in pitching an idea. And so, okay. No, that's not what I want to do. Undo. Undo. Undo. Okay. So, another cool trick Photoshop is lagging. There we go. Uh another cool Photoshop bug. I love you, Adobe. I love you. There we go. Uh is this trick, which is the smudge

  59. 00:47:27

tool. Um and I use this quite a bit for furry creatures and stuff and also for hair. Um is I'll take what's here. I'm just going to merge these layers together cuz Um is to now I can actually pull on the edges here. Let's take the strength to about 90. not nine, 90. And now I can start to blend things together. Uh there's some elements here that I'm

  60. 00:48:18

not really sure though on the anatomy. Like there's some blurry bits that I do need to refine. so I'll get on that. Let's make this 100. 100. Ah. Stop. 100. Thank you. Okay. And the cool thing about this is because we started with a photo and then changed with photos.

  61. 00:49:05

We can add more photos if you want to. see for the ears I kind of want to have them swept back. That's really cool. Uh and we can actually incorporate more photos on here cuz I still we still haven't completely Um I haven't gotten to the lighting phase just yet. So we can still incorporate more photos in here. Get some textures in. Um I do like this kind of like uh I got this picture of like uh a rhino that's kind of like been in mud. Mhm. Um so I can incorporate a lot of those these type of textures on here for now.

  62. 00:49:54

Uh just to inform where I want to take So, let's drop that. Let's put that in overlay. Just so that I have a little bit more surface detail information. So, that So, when I get to the painting, I have uh not a clean surface, but like some rough textures in. So, let's add that part in here. So, let's warp it a bit. This one's a little too strong over What if he What if he gave him a

  63. 00:50:45

like left him with a patch of fur down the middle like a mohawk? Right here? Yeah, we can. We can. Give a little bit little edge. Little edge to our sloth. That is no problem. Uh what I would do for that then is let's see. I could use I really thought we were I was going to end up as that one that was picking its nose. Glad I didn't. Fortunately not. Uh I actually I actually as much as I troll uh on on these shows, like this is actually one of my favorite favorite things to do.

  64. 00:51:32

Um in in concept is like uh is this this process. So, I I I wouldn't fool around too much. What you make as a concept as as a I was going to say world-class concept, artist, I couldn't bring myself to give you that compliment. Huh? But as as a pretty decent concept artist Yeah. You like making concepts? Wait, was that a question? I just like how how my instinct was legitimately to give you a terrific compliment compliment and then like something in my brain was like, "No!" No. "Don't!" It burns. But the thought I had was actually

  65. 00:52:21

world-class concept artist. Oh, thank you. And then and then something in my brain was like, "No!" Okay, that's Yeah. Yeah, I I like the furhawk. I just need to incorporate a little bit onto here. Like it's it's like I I love the thing about how I about how I how much I love this process is um like I put this image here on purpose

  66. 00:53:10

just to show um our viewers here kind of like where it came from. And yeah, so it was super troll in the beginning, but it can it's not going to look like the the original photo at the end. Um and it's it's it's always really fun to see kind of like where we came from. Somebody was talking about what ac- what kind of accent they have. All right, you guys tell me. Let me hear some accent suggestions in the chat. Yeah, we're we're making this together, Okay, I feel like this is a a pretty good place. So now

  67. 00:53:59

Cockney accent. Cockney? So it's British? Well, there there's like 30 different British accents. Cockney is one of them. Yeah. This guy looks like a Mortimer. He'd be speaking with a Cockney accent. I don't know if a Cockney accent works. It does. It can work. Okay. So now Okay, I feel like this is at a really good place. I got a good foundation. I'm going to now um Sean Connery. I don't think I can do

  68. 00:54:47

a Sean Connery. I thought it'd be really cool. Let's make him really short, like 4 ft tall. You'll bash make him like 4 ft tall? Losers always whine about that best. So now I'm going to darken Do you see the best? This? And now I get to add lighting information. So let's have I'm going to use yours as reference. It looks like you have you've got like your brightest source on the right. So kind of right right around here. You've got like your regular fill I don't He he not look Irish to me at

  69. 00:55:37

all. Maintain the eyes. I think we can crank the shadows a bit more. All right, chat, we need suggestions for the name of this guy. That's what we didn't come That's what we didn't do. Oh, we didn't Yeah. We need We need a name for this guy. A A name for his species, not not not for the individual uh character.

  70. 00:56:23

What what is what is the name for this species? We've got Tavaren and Sheon and Banu and Vanduul. Tedians? Tedians? It's harsh. Slothabee? Wow. Slothabee? Amazing. Disquidians? Oh god. Okay. I think I'll also now

  71. 00:57:12

Grimwalts. Okay. Let's actually start adding more proper shadows now. But um Yeah, let's uh Just make these look like the Carthac. The mysterious race of the Carthac are just sea otters. Sloth sloths. The cool is already taken. They were in Star Trek Enterprise. It's too dark. A little too dark.

  72. 00:58:20

Let's darken that. What time is it? Uh it it 11:58. Oh [ __ ] You have a few extra minutes if you need it. And I could like finish this in like 2 hours. Like 1 or 2 more hours I could finish Uh fudge nuggets. Well, we're going to give it to the We're going to give it to the lower team. Since it's you know it's it's not an actual like alien race in the thing. It's a fictional alien race for like stories. And we'll see if that didn't inspire something. So, you may see this guy again. I mean I

  73. 00:59:08

could Then again you may not. It may die on the pile like so many other Yeah. things do. We're making no promises. Fudge nugget. Fudge nuggets. A sludger. Uh I'm going to give him lips cuz they speak. Probably too much. very important. Oh for Uh let's let's take let's take a different tack. What would Jay Lee and

  74. 00:59:56

I's uh celebrity couple name be? We'll see if that works for this guy. Well, maybe. If anything uh this has proven is that naming things is really hard. Looking at the options that are in chat It's like you would need an entire department to help to assist with those things.

  75. 01:00:44

Imagine. Huxley? LL Cool J. All right, we're we're we're set. This is LL Cool J. LL Cool J. This is LL Cool J. That's never been used before. I approve. And if I want I can add Can incorporate a little bit more tech.

  76. 01:01:35

If I wanted to. I want these guys to show up there. A little bit more sophisticated. You You added that and instantly became a Starfox thing. Yeah, could be. Star sloth. Do a barrel roll. And maybe he's a pilot. But like yeah, like we did this in like what? Like an hour? Mhm. So like I I'm estimating that I I could probably done with this in a close to another hour or so. So in a day, if like a regular work day is eight, I could easily make like what? Like four. Four, five of these in a day.

  77. 01:02:22

Um to get different type of variants and stuff. Uh different ideas, uh incorporate different creatures. Uh and it's just it's just super quick to get a lot of different options. Um like the next pass that I would have to do is go in and do a proper lighting pass. Um which would be like just to make just to give it that edge to make it look more realistic. But like you can already tell like what type of creature this kind of generally looks like. Yeah. Which is why uh a lot of a lot of artists do use this process to kind of like spitball ideas. kind of kind of get like the basic anatomy of what this creature could be.

  78. 01:03:13

and then we take this over to character art and then we'll actually uh define what the creature is the actual anatomy is and what makes sense. But, this is a good good quick exercise that um uh for artists. And I do recommend people give it a give it a try. It's a lot of fun. Uh this guy owns a this guy owns a series of Dumpers Depots. Maybe extra cash on the side. Mhm. You know what? Add some concept fog, cuz why not? That make that makes things look real.

  79. 01:04:08

It's video dev- video game development 101. Hide it with fog. Hide it with fog. It looks real. Helps it blend. I wish I was I wish I was joking. I know. I'm I'm not joking. I'm I'm revealing the deepest, darkest secrets of video game development here. Yep. Yep. Motion blur and fog. Let's go. I did to take That's exactly what I was going to do next. That's exactly what I was going to do next. So, I know this is like this is far from being done. But, another step that I do take because this is kind of like a photo shoot type of thing. Um what I will at the towards the very end, what I will do for this is put a lens blur.

  80. 01:05:03

Lens blur. Oh, whoops. Wrong layer. Filter That's a little too much. Right around there is fine. And what I will then do is focus the focus on areas that I want to be left hot. yeah, there you go. Yeah, I think I I I

  81. 01:05:52

think right I think right now we have the main character in the Star Sloth series. Yeah. Star Sloth series. Ah. Or Sloth Star. to stop. Sloth Star. Oh, like one word. Like like he was invented in the '90s. Yeah, he's Sloth Star, one word. Sloth Star. Yep. Yep, both S's are capitalized, just like that first tasty. Very very very '90s. He was invented in the

  82. 01:06:41

in the 2890s. The 2890s. Uh now, let's use this brush instead. Yeah, I can I can keep messing around around with this, but I think people can kind of get the gist of it. Yeah. Um So, this is this is one process that we do use in industry and in film and in games and uh it's just a quick quick and dirty way to get a feel for a character. Um especially an alien an alien an alien type. Um and I've done some projects long time

  83. 01:07:29

ago for uh like basic creature design and stuff like that or if this was going to be taken to like a VFX house for makeup for makeup has to be done um they would ask for sketches like these just to get kind of like a a general understanding of what um the makeup artist should expect. This is very cool. I think this might be my favorite thing you've made. Had a pretty rocky start. I'm not going to lie. Like No, it didn't. It had No, that all of that was 100% intentional. I think it was a great start. It was Those were my favorite part of the process. But yeah, this is where we started and this is kind of where we ended up. Um so, I think this is a good place to

  84. 01:08:18

um oh to leave it off here. But imagine if I went in and I rendered everything, made the lighting a little bit more realistic, added more detail, started flushing out like the cheekbones and then the the muzzle and added more fur, make things a little bit more cohesive all throughout, but this is kind of like a good uh jumping point for if I wanted to pass this off to someone or if someone were to look at this, they would have like, "Oh, that's a really cool idea." or Uh and add more character. All right, so we'll wrap it up there. thank you so much, Jaylee. No problem. All right, that's it. That's Star Citizen Live Game Dev Alien Encounter, everybody.
