hey everybody welcome to another edition of calling all Deb's our weekly Q&A series where I take questions live from you the star citizen backer opposed them directly to our developers usually on skype I say usually but I'm pretty sure every single one of these has been on skype I've never actually walked into somebody's office and done one of those but now I have an idea for next week's show joining us on the show this week we have a calling all Deb's newbies someone who's never been on the show we are going to foundry 42 frankfurt in our own Vitus own okis we're gonna see if I got that right Vitus how you doing man hey did I do pretty poorly pretty poorly yeah yeah okay do you want to give it a shot so it's just so people know my name is Vytas all kunis all right I'm not even gonna attempt it after that and
- 00:00:57
what is your title with foundry I'm a system designer in Frankfurt office system designer with Frankfurt operas now most of the questions that we get probably overwhelming amount of questions we get for calling all devs each and every month are about systems design some ship design in there but mostly its system design so you were bound to come up eventually the question I have for you is an interesting one it says will life-support systems have limits as to how many people they can support for instance can we cram dozens of players on board and keep them all breathing I saw a twitch stream just yesterday with 50 people on an Origin 600 I do all 50 people just in one ship so it's a timely question if ever there was one oh yes the plan is is so how it
- 00:01:49
works we have rooms each room has a volume each volume can hold X amount of gas we track the mass of gas in every single room so we have producers which produce oxygen for you and we have consumers in this case it's the players so yes technically you can breathe out all the air and die horribly alright and I imagine that the next question that anybody's gonna have is how long before that happens but I imagine that has to change depending on the ship the equipment the size of the room there's a number of factors it's going to determine that right yes naturally it depends on the size of the room it depends on oxygen producers that we have on board it also depends are you wearing a helmet because if you are you're not breathing atmosphere from the from the room so you're using internal
- 00:02:37
oxygens oxygen supply I am now imagining like a yelp style ranking website for our space ships specifically dedicated to how many people you can cram in there before they all die it'll happen I'm counting on you star citizen community well I'm not saying that if I would be a hacker I would hack the doors lock them and disable the oxygen producers I'm not saying that and nobody's saying that it no I'm cool all right all right all right all right Vitus thank you so much man I congratulations on your first calling all depths I'm sure this won't be our last thanks I might say next time bye all right thank you so much Vitus now moving along to foundry 42 UK and our very own
- 00:03:23
Andy Nicholson systems designer out of edit there I haven't had him on the show for a while we've got a question that comes up quite a bit and I think you're gonna like the answer Andy hey you doing man hey Jared all right how are you you know it's another day in paradise all I said last week I was gonna stop giving that answer I need to give I need to find it better stock answer 200 sorry guys Andy it's bitter mosses we've had a hedge on the show you were on one of the first episodes and of course we've had you on reverse the verse in the past what is your actual system uh what is your actual title for the product you almost gave it away yeah systems designer now yeah only QA manager for midtech designer yeah you know that's a common progression by the way you know a little site site down here people always ask how do you get
- 00:04:11
into the game you know business you know the game industry I did you become a game designer stuff a lot of people start off as QA q is a great place to learn all manner of of games of game design and game support you stuff like that so we get a little a lot of good people from our QA system and Andy Andy I got a question for you it's about key bytes right okay yeah yeah I know you're the key biting guy here yeah you're the one who drew the short straw I think John can we get more key binds for actions for a for example like starting our engines power etc at some point I like the inner thought in the cockpit interaction but I would still like to bind these actions to keys
- 00:04:59
as well for quick access yeah yeah I guess the show answers yes we've the intention is for us to have as many of these as we can get in and available as actions that bindable anything that you can sort of look around and see and interact with we want to have shortcuts for just for those players that want to use it really I mean now everyone wants to interact in that manner with lots of stuff physically some do and we want to character both so anything that comes in probably comes in first as in an interactive button and it's just about when we have the time to open these up as actions all right right I'm sorry
- 00:05:50
yes it's gonna say how many notes I mean we could design you so much as we want but we want engineers we need engineering time to look into them yeah that's where I was going with that yeah it's one thing to put a list of things yeah we want this too but then you need the engineering the programming to go in and actually do that and keep buying things you know it's not just it's not just an alternative to the interaction system you know a key button allows people to use control panels you know I've seen some folks are using things like that got a stream deck you know and mapping he buying action so they can start their engine you know that they have physical buttons right there on their on their desk to start their engines you know start to power it's like that and then of course that's how third-party programs like voiceattack work boy Jack worked by you know another interaction system you they give voice commands and it triggers the key
- 00:06:38
bind command and they can start so that way you can do start your engines and stuff like that so so having these alternatives to the interaction system which you know which we which we all love just opens up the variety of gameplay options for in the ways that people interact with their ships in the environment star citizen so we're very keen on that and you started some of this we should you started we started some of this back in 300 I mean some of these some of these things are already in game like I know they meant they mentioned specifically start engines and power on I think some of those are in 3 2 if I'm not mistaken yeah they should be I hope so yeah remember mapping them to to all of our hotels devices as well yeah there's another business thing right there yeah mines you can map it to your hotel what's the point of a warthog really unless you can press the to open your
- 00:07:28
doors you know yeah I think the point of a warthog is to is to feel that actual metal in your hand and pretend that you're you're behind an a-10 at least that's what I do I have one and I don't use it for the game I just every once in a while I just hold it and just pretend I'm a pilot I mean it's just pressing dials and switches it feels so good though this is not a paid endorsement by Thrustmaster or any of that stuff that I suggest all right no they're all terrible but now you just swung the pendulum way the other way trespasser is not terrible we'd love to our semester there send all letters to any Nicholson care factory for you to use please Oh Freedom House Winslow alright Andy I'll let you get back to work men great hey thanks very much all right Karen all right thank you Andy now moving back to foundry 42
- 00:08:17
frankfurt and just going back and forth once again to dandruff and lead system designer out of foundry 42 frankfurt dan how you doing man oh oh good here how's it going you know it's the the Disco abides there we got a different I got a follow-up question for you after after last week's episode about griefing versus piracy it says will there be a way to play in the persistent universe in peace without fear of getting your stuff ripped four shot down over and over again by other players if you're not quote-unquote good enough or can't invest as much time into the game as others basically put no more succinct for him is PvP mandatory for the persistent universe now PvP is
- 00:09:08
definitely not mandatory but at the same time it's close to impossible to guarantee a 100% that no one will ever know other player will ever deal with you in a bad way players are very inventive when it comes to creating chaos so you will get people just crashing into other people just to annoy them so as much as we try to make it a lawful in for space for people who are have just started for people who maybe they don't want that type of gameplay at the same time it there will be people who find a way around it and then it kind of the options are the people can can make can open the ticket with us and
- 00:09:59
we will have to take care of people who repeatedly do this if it happens once fair enough it happens once we can we take that as a very fair game and yeah this is where you won't be able to to have 100% free free of peaceful free of any other player's involvement type of game play but we're gonna aim for like that 99% we're gonna try to make the rules as strict as possible in the places where people start and where people try to learn and we're gonna also at the same time try to make it unappealing for for more advanced people to go there and mess with their beginners so it's the more advanced people will get pulled towards richer areas more interesting things more unexplored things they will have to go
- 00:10:48
there to get the good stuff so that's leaves yeah that leaves the the core world a bit more relaxed and more filled with people who just want to have either have a slow steady pace upwards or just they just started and they need to figure out oh how do I do that I don't want to get killed 500 times when I'm trying to figure out where this button yeah it's a it's you were referring to you EE space you know the space that the that the United Empire of Earth has gone and settled throughout the galaxy that there's a lot of systems that are going to be under UE control are even systems like the stanton system which isn't necessarily under UE control but it's under corporate settled control you know you've got you've got you know you've got you've got the arccorp and you've got them the the micro tech and they all
- 00:11:36
have their the Crusader and they all have their own security forces yeah there's gonna be a will be a force there it doesn't matter if it's you II might be that it's organization number 55 doesn't matter which which one it is they will maintain their law inside there on their own low bubble and they'll take care of the players that get attacked there but when it comes to players could becoming very inventive yes we'll try to make sure some of these gaps are not present but players are I mean a fixed system will always be beaten by someone who is very things outside the box they find a way we're trying to close we don't want to close too much of these of these ways because that will constrict players who want to have proper pirate gameplay but we need to find the right balance between the
- 00:12:24
two and the battle the balance between the gaps we intend and the gaps that we don't kind of thing yeah exactly all right yeah you know I I think that I think that's just how it should be you you want a lawful safe enjoyable experience for the majority of folks but you still want to give enough avenue enough a purchase there for the folks who really want this other style of gameplay to have options not in every place in the world not in every situation in the galaxy but enough there to feel like they're getting they're getting a just as informed and it is entertaining a gameplay experience as everybody else yep exactly all right man that's it I know you got a meeting to scramble too so thank you so
- 00:13:11
much yep all right thanks bye bye bye all right thank you so much now we are moving to foundry 42 you we're just bouncing back and forth it's Frankfort its UK its Penguins UK we are going to our good friend Johnny just Silvius at a foundry 42 UK Johnny how you doing man I'm great today Jared how are you yeah I'm doing I'm doing great I got to come up with a number of stock answers I have to actually I have to stop asking you guys the u.s. stop asking me so I have to stop giving the same answer every single just be rude sell does not ask you next time f you [Laughter] alright Johnny it's been a while since you'd be on the show what's your channel what do you do for star citizen I'm a senior system designer I mostly involved in the FPS experience so recently I've been doing a lot of work
- 00:14:00
with tossin and Frankfurt on weapon 2.0 stuff so it's getting all the weapons converted over making sure we head in the right direction but yeah anything FPS I'd generally touch on at some point so yeah alright then I'm calling the right person I had a question for you from the backers it says what kind of non-combat personal equipment are planned they they say are they're mining drills are there night-vision goggles or their handheld tractor beam emitters I think they're trying to make some subtle suggestions there but we'll ignore that what kind of non-combat personal equipment do we have planned okay one I think we've at least touched on lightly in the past is the multi-tool use call the pyro the pyro multi-tool it has several different attachments which makes it kind of like a bit of a pocket
- 00:14:48
Swiss Army knife so if you're carrying the attachments around with you you'll kind of have the ability to do a bunch of different things so the main one that we're kind of we've prototyped the most is the cutting attachment so you'll be able to cut through specific surfaces if it's quite a tough surface you might not have any luck getting through it it's quite a small tool it's probably only about this big so it's kind of like a little pocket welder in Qatar so yeah you'll be able to cut through certain surfaces like if you need to get to a panel of some sort that's locked you might be able to cut through that surface and actually manage to get to it one of the other attachments is the repair and salvage attachment so kind of as an example so if you're Gladius had taken some you could kind of go up to the damaged wing where you've stripped to a bunch of metal from some light laser fire or something you'll have a repair canister
- 00:15:36
that you can attach to this thing and you could just kind of start filling that in so you're kind of repairing mostly superficial damage on there I don't think you'll be able to kind of weld a busted wing back on with this tiny little thing but now that I know it might take you a while so if you're persistent baby yeah another one that people might be quite interested in is a mini tractor attachment and again you've got to remember that this thing is quite small so you'll be able to in zero-g you'll be able to kind of push and pull things so you'll either be able to pull yourself towards objects heavier than yourself or you'll be able to pull things lighter than yourself towards you but obviously you're not going to be grabbing someone's reclaimer and kind of like tailing along the back of it it's more meant for kind of pushing pulling crates around and things like that but
- 00:16:23
you know Who am I to say always with you what cannot be done I appreciate it I'm getting a crap for it but I appreciate it some of the more combo combat orientated stuff like the gadgets that we've again we may have touched on very lightly in the past these are much more kind of in a prototyping phase where we need to actually get them in game and play with them and actually see if they they're a good fit for starters and we don't want to just take a look at you know they come up with an idea and go boom okay let's take this hologram and you know a hologram decoy or something and it'll be perfect for star citizen we'll go all the way with it and then we'll put it in and then we might realize that it's not a good fit so yeah
- 00:17:11
we've kind of looked at gadgets and gone like do we want kind of consumable items so we've got things like that in the game at the moment with the we've got the oxygen capsules and we've got the medical pens so playing with the idea of putting different substances in that thing they'll have different effects on your character like do we want you know a stim pack style thing that will kind of temporarily speed up movement speed I'm not saying they're going to be illegal substances but you know we may be skirting the line a bit there we've got different we want to try out different deployables so if you think about mines different types of damage on the mines so you could even have an EMP mine that might mess with people's radars explosive mines like your more traditional blow your legs off kind of
- 00:17:58
thing and even things like remote turrets obviously remote or it's a little bit difficult to prototype because really to see if we can make it work with the weapons we've already got so yeah like I say we need to make sure that we can actually do these things and then we've got things like throw balls as well like explosives and even potentially throwable shields there's a ton of stuff that we can play around with there but yeah we've nothing set in stone we've got a lot of ideas we want to play with ya folks who have followed the project for some time will remember a lot of this stuff like the like the personal shield generator and select that in our early early start marine prototyping prototyping back when l phonic was with us and working on the project back then we've touched on this in the past I think we've touched it on our TV before we've touched on on this show too I think that you know those
- 00:18:48
things were representative of our intention that time the many of those things are still our intention at least to explore the possibility so so you may you may see them at some point be introduced into something like star marine and we'll play with them but I don't believe we have a timetable on that at the moment the roadmap is your place to find all questions related to timetable so ya know not to expect it any time in the quotation fingers soon until you see it appear on the roadmap and then adjust your expectations per when their features like that might come accordingly yep those credits will just fit anyone we can yep alright man thank you so much I'll let you get back to work cool no problem thank you later well that about does it for this week's show especially thanks to Vitus and Andy Nicholson and Dan Ruffin and Johnny to savea's for taking the time to be here
- 00:19:37
on the show with us this week remember you can submit your questions for consideration each and every week up on the threat up a spectrum and don't forget to vote to parts you submit you vote and then I do my thing trying to find and match divides to available answers and all that good stuff this week was a little bit different we went back in we took questions from the January thread the February the marsh thread and the aprile thread we do make new threads every single month we're gonna make a new one probably by the time you watch this will be a July thread but you know that's just as we keep the topics you know current and in fresh and what's on your minds you know today or as close to today as possible but you know occasionally we're still gonna go back and get some of those chestnuts especially the ones that we've been chasing an answer down for freaking out for a while like like getting that multi-tool information it actually took a little while anyway for calling all Deb's I am content manager for global
