[Music] w hello everybody and welcome to another edition of L makers God to the Galaxy where we Spotlight one of the many many many many many Star systems in the Star Citizen universe and talk about the system itself uh bit about its history and uh some insight into you know some of the the choices that we made when kind of coming up with it and conceiving it uh I'm Dave hadock I'm the lead writer over here at Cloud Imperium games and I will be your guide on today's Fantastical

  2. 00:01:02

adventure of sadness uh so today we are going to be talking about a system uh that's pretty heavily steeped in the uh history of the uee and was actually also recently featured in the June issue of jumpo uh so if you're a subscriber should go check that out uh and uh for those who don't know we are going to be talking about the Garin system now uh as always I'm going to invoke my usual sort of caveat uh that that to say that we're we're still developing this system so it's possible that some of the elements that we talk about here uh might change from now until when the system's actually done but just want to uh let you know so you can keep that in mind uh but anyway let's get started so going to head over here to our trusty star map uh where we are currently looking at a

  3. 00:01:51

familiar place called Earth uh all right and let's see so we're starting off in the Sal system uh okay let me turn on jump points there we go Zoom back Zoom back Zoom back uh just for Easy's sake 2D so uh Garen system is over here uh so you can see it's a fair like four systems away uh from Saul and uh based on sort of where it's situated here you can see we got uh jump points that lead it to Idris and Banshee as far as the e goes uh it goes to the Lear system which is an unclaimed system which is home to the The Outsiders if you're familiar with them and

  4. 00:02:39

interestingly enough it actually if you follow this path right here takes you down to bakus which is part of the Banu protectorate um which is a pretty actually kind of fun thing but we'll we'll get into that a bit later uh so one thing actually you'll probably notice if you look look closely uh is that the symbol uh for Garen is different than sort of all the other ones it's it is technically a uee system which you can see here and here and here uh but it's not seems like it's not labeled as such that's because uh Garen is what's called a developing system so um it's a system that's basically been put under the fair chance act which was a uh sort of a government uh initiative that was created to uh protect

  5. 00:03:30

developing species from interference so they could basically like develop on their own um until they become space fairing want decide to become or sorry let me start that again um so one thing you probably notice here with uh the gar system is actually the symbol for the system itself is a little different than some of the other ones so these these blue ones here UE e uh that one is unclaimed and um even though G is technically a UE system it's actually falls under the fair chance act so it's it's actually considered a developing system uh the fair chance act uh was a basically a government bill that was passed that was a a uh designed to protect uh developing species from interference basically so basic we would

  6. 00:04:19

sort of set up a perimeter around them and shield them from outside interference so they could sort of grow and evolve on their own and then once they become space fairing then we can establish contact and you know uh and go from there uh so technically Garen falls under that and for those of you who are familiar with the system know that there's there's sort of a weird backstory to that but we'll get into that in a second um so anyway so first off let's actually talk about the system from a creative standpoint uh Garren was actually uh referenced before the game was even announced weirdly enough uh so it's it's actually been part of the Star Citizen Universe since before the beginning of it in a sense um I'll include a link in the uh the description

  7. 00:05:07

to uh the original post so you can have a read if you haven't seen it but it was a it was a time capsule uh basically it was one of the 30 uh installments that we had released uh in the days leading up to the original GDC announcement in 2012 uh and basically the context for it was it was a planet uh planet of garant 2 was home to a sentient species that was massacred and the how and the why why they were massacred uh we will get into in a little bit but um we'll start off with a sort of overview of the system itself so uh jumping in here I'll get a 3D because it's super cool uh so you can see in a nutshell Garen is consists of four planets uh and uh it was discovered in 287 four by

  8. 00:06:00

Imperial Pathfinders uh so who basically immediately turned it over to seated it to uee control uh the Central Star right here is a gtype dwarf star uh so you can see that the the green zone here is is is pretty compact um I think garant 2 is like roughly 1.1 Au away so it's a kind of a small kind of a smaller system uh so Planet wise we have Garen one here which is right on top of this this star here so the surface of it the idea of is that it's really hot that like obviously all the the the starf facing side of it is just basically like kind of a sea of lava which personally I'm super jazzed about seeing in the game once it

  9. 00:06:48

actually happens uh but otherwise there's not much else you can do with it because it's just it's so the it's so close to the Sun that it's just it's too it's it's too volatile uh so we actually skip over guarant two for the time being because that's going to be sort of the meat of what we're talking about uh no my fault uh so we're going to go out to Garen 3 which is way out here and uh gar 3 is basically situated sort of right on the edge of the frost line here so that's the green sort of the green zone here's the beginning of the frost line and then the end of it is sort of out here is so it's sort of right right

  10. 00:07:37

on the edge uh but it was sort of it's the idea is it's classified as like a super Earth uh but because of its position basically it's sort of an ice Planet like there's just sort of there's no there's no life on there uh and then out last but not least we have Garen 4 which is way out here okay uh which is basically just sort of a small kind of rock uh out in the middle of of nowhere uh not a lot really to to to speak about uh there is actually one of the things that we we sort of talked about was that there was a uh sort of a monument that the uee built out here called The Sentinel which was sort of meant to commemorate the tragedy of of garant 2 and uh you know sort of remind people not to let that

  11. 00:08:27

sort of sort of awfulness happen again so uh that being said let's jump into guarant 2 so uh it was basically a uh Rocky terrestrial planet uh but uh the initial sort of uh surveyors were thrilled and stunned actually to find that that there was a uh civilization on the planet surface and uh while they hadn't attained any kind of space travel or anything like that like they were clearly sentient there was clearly you know this was the the the first steps of a a society so uh this was huge news at the time so I mean because you got to bear in mind that like while we've sort of had indications uh of like ancient alien civilizations when we discovered planets there's the the ruins on uh in Kazi on

  12. 00:09:17

Tera and obviously Hades system is just a a big graveyard um and of course you know whatever animals exist on the planets that have sort of you know naturally occurring you know oxygen atmospheres and stuff like that uh Humanity had only encountered other space fairing sentient species to this point so this was sort of a huge deal uh and so the imperator at the time was uh Linton Messer the 11th and uh he decided that uh that it was their obligation to uplift the species uh and he gave a very powerful uh public address that featured the phrase we will be Gods which you know uh only lead to good things and he was coming at this from the sort of right moral Center uh so anyway u a team

  13. 00:10:07

was assembled to sort of uh to study this the the the culture and it was put under this guy uh Michael cheris and he was sort of tasked with uh figuring out not only a way to communicate with them but also exactly how to sort of introduce you know technology to them you know so it wasn't just about you know landing on the planet just dropping a spaceship and taken off like you know how to how to properly kind of bring them up uh to to sort of our level of understanding so obviously not a very simple Prospect uh so the team spent years basically sort of being very respectful and unobtrusively kind of studying the aliens and trying to understand their culture like trying to understand what they had figured out at this point so we could kind of use that as a framew of reference all that type

  14. 00:10:55

of stuff uh they also ended up doing you know very very thorough scans to to really understand like the composition of the planet you know the the sort of the natural resources there all that type of stuff uh so they had a complete picture that they could work from so uh unfortunately for pretty much everybody involved um Linton Messer the 11th was pretty much the sort of embodiment of what two and a half centuries of you know viciousness self-entitlement and Corruption can create so he was a pretty horrible person uh now before we continue on it's actually also important to remember that uh where the rest of humanity was at this period in time so this is around 2789 uh now you had had the murder of Anthony Tanaka was 30 years ago so that the sort of very famous incident where

  15. 00:11:44

this this this kid was was executed uh but since then you know the seed of revolution had been slowly stewing you know there have been kind of more and more activist groups being you know formed and we getting slightly emboldened and there was that this sort of palpable undercurrent to everything going on uh I mean linton's father Ulisses had been con had was aware of it and was convinced though that uh sort of this construction of these sort of massive super complexes that just sort of extoled Humanity's greatness and stuff like that would be sort of the answer to it that would quell everybody and make everybody calm down because they' be like oh those those buildings are super sweet you know we're not mad at you anymore type thing uh he's wrong but anyway uh in a sense you know uh when Linton sort of staged a

  16. 00:12:36

coup to overthrow his father and and seize power basically um part of that was actually his sister Fiona uh went out and supported surreptitiously supported some of these activist groups and uh the whole thing was sort of kicked off around this thing he was Tred uh ulys sort of Legacy was going to be this massive stadium called the can uh stadium and uh at the night of the opening resistance groups basically bombed it and and blew it up and uh resistance groups that had been seriusly aided by Fiona and consequently Linton uh basically were responsible for it and and that was what facilitated Linton being able to grab power so there was basically there was a lot of kind of

  17. 00:13:24

descent and violence that was brewing just underneath the surface of the uve so things were starting to kind of percolate and and Linton either didn't know or didn't care I mean there's you could make the assumption that he probably just assumed that you know people wouldn't have the backbone to stand up to him uh you know because he he'd come from a long line of you know oppressors basically so arrogance was definitely one of his strong Series so anyway getting back to the people of garant 2 years had passed they're making very slow progress obviously because shearis is like being very respectful and all that type of thing and but so unfortunately you know Linton grew kind of bored with the prospector just sort of moved on you know checked out of that whole idea and or saw something else shiny and went chasing after that you know so he kind of gave

  18. 00:14:12

up on the notion of uplifting the creatures and especially when he saw one of the very detailed reports listing the the volume of resources that the planet had uh so he sort of opted for wealth over his own you know we be we will be God's thing uh so he completely abandon shas's team and rets them with basically providing information for companies uh and preparing reports and stuff like that so he could basically kind of you know get terraformers and Mining consortiums to start a bidding war uh and and basically rip the planet apart uh I mean just horrible stuff you know he would like authorize tours to the planet surface for executives to to personally survey the thing so of course there are these aliens now there who are freaking out because there's these things coming out

  19. 00:14:59

sky and people walking around and pointing at stuff and taking notes and then getting back and flying away and stuff like that so they were freaking out obviously uh but he didn't care uh they sold off the rights the Imperial coffers swelled and they flipped the terraformers on so basically all life on garant 2 was affixiated to death as their atmosphere was transformed into something that was more habitable palatable for us uh and not for them so uh probably one of the more horrifying things that you could do and callous and heartless and sociopathic everything uh but it was the footage of this uh that was smuggled out there was a resistance group called The Tide uh that smuggled this stuff out uh this footage out and released it to the public and and that

  20. 00:15:47

was that turned out to be the Catalyst that sparked uh the revolution so from there it was the revolution caught fire and it just spread and went like Gang Busters and just everybody was up in arms and and managed to do it after a couple hundred years of of mess or oppression they they threw them out um so needless to say in the immediate aftermath of that uh the new uee government uh was desperate to kind of make amends for this horrible horrible thing now everything was dead there so there's not you know they couldn't bring them back to life or something like that but they basically dedicated a lot of resources and mines and companies and stuff like that to try and um restore gar to to its original state so change

  21. 00:16:37

the atmosphere back try and uh replant stuff uh all that type of things uh and so that's basically where it's been at it's been sort of this sort of land lasting Monument to sort of how desperate or greed can become but also at the same time this it's the symbol of the thing that basically allowed Humanity to kind of you know take back uh their Destiny you know from from awful people uh so where does that leave us today so 2947 uh what is the system like now uh as I mentioned earlier Garren is still uh technically under the fair chance act which was enacted which was the legislation was actually created to prevent something like this from ever

  22. 00:17:24

happening again uh and so they sort of put it the system under under its control mostly again it's a symbolic gesture uh but but again just sort of an indication of you know that they're committed to not not kind of doing this sort of awfulness again so um anyway so so yeah so the the surface of garant to is off limits to civilians uh but um but yeah they're still kind of doing what they can to kind of bring it back to uh the way it was before we screwed it up so outside of that uh you can notice right here here by the sun uh you have uh Obi heler which was actually the original um research station that sharis's team used to uh to study the planet and now consequently is what the the scientists

  23. 00:18:13

were using to try and restore the planet um there's also we were talking about having like a uh basically a museum for um uh about terraforming and sort of the responsibilities of terraforming and and stuff like that to try and educate the people uh and and again prevent people from Ever letting something like this happen again uh and it's not situated on the map yet I mean I assume that that's with a lot of our other Fair uh like developing systems we have um stations that are military bases and stuff and I assume that there would be some kind of military or law enforcement but we haven't as of yet uh kind of placed them yet so uh as far as trading opportunities go um you have uh some there's some

  24. 00:19:00

mining consortiums set up on Garen 3 which I can't seem to find there it is uh so basically like they were to to help fund kind of the development of the restoration of garant 2 the idea was that they needed to generate some extra some extra cash uh to help support it and and so they did a very deep dive study basically on Gear 3 uh to make sure that it was obviously not habited and then they started doing some some mining operations on it to help subsidize uh some of the things they were doing and uh but otherwise as I mentioned before one of the interesting things is again you have a uh jump point over here uh to bacus so um you know basically one of the bigger

  25. 00:19:52

technically one of the bigger uh ban ban new systems and even though actually technically uh Coral is considered the more uh commercial route into Banu space you know uh this is a pretty direct line straight into kind of the one of the trading hubs of of the protectorate uh and is actually one of the sites of the the Gathering which is what the sort of the Banu um uh events where the leaders kind of get together to talk about uh civilization spanning issues and stuff like that uh so yeah you basically get a lot of a lot of people coming through here uh to to to go swing into B new space and see what's going on over there because they're super fun uh so yeah that's pretty much Garen in a nutshell uh again if you're a subscriber uh and

  26. 00:20:40

you'd like to learn more uh you should check out the galactic guide from the June issue of jump Point um and there's also actually some additional information in that that same month uh in the portfolio from that month we did a a thing on ryari which uh some of the one of the founders was actually part of sharis's original team team and the company helped uh with some of the restoration stuff specifically with the the Agriculture and the the plants and stuff like that uh so it's it's pretty fun um otherwise you know you should totally check out if you haven't poked around the star map here you should never waste an opportunity to do that it's uh very pretty and very addictive uh so um yeah again I'd like to thank uh thank our subscribers uh for making shows like this possible and of course a
