Hi everybody. Just talking to Witcher 3. Welcome to Star Citizen Live Game Dev making ship up four. I'm your host Jared Huckaby and we're back. Feel like we've only been off for like two weeks, but it's a feels like it's been a while. Hi, welcome back. Uh if you've never seen Star Citizen Live before, it's where we take about an hour out of the end of our week. Uh we invite some developers over, uh tell them they have to stop doing whatever it was that they were doing cuz I mean it's probably not important. Come over here and goof off with me for about an hour. And that's what we're doing this week. Sometimes we do a Q&A, sometimes we do an interview, and sometimes on our game dev specials we sit and watch somebody work for an hour and that's what we're doing this week. So joining me on the show this week, meet me at camera two.
- 00:00:52
We've got Alberto Petronio and uh the sole member of the entire ship team, Dan McCabe. Hello. How you doing guys? I'm well, thank you. Uh cuz every show is somebody's first show, let's take a few moments to introduce ourselves. Uh uh hi, I'm Jared. I just did an introduction, so I won't do it again. Alberto, tell everybody who you are and what you do. Uh I'm Alberto and I'm the lead vehicle concept artist. And what does a lead vehicle concept artist do? I leads the vehicle concept art team. We do the spaceships and some weapon. Spaceships and weapons. We do the first part. Basically, we take the ideas, see where they can go, see where they can fit in the game play, stuff like this. And then we give what we do to them and they do the rest. And then tells you I can't do it. Yeah, exactly. That's Mark. No, that's Mark generally. Yeah, Mark can do it. Mark's the one who says we can't. Oh, we didn't get even
- 00:01:40
two minutes into the show before the Mark Gibson bashing. We love Mark. Sorry Mark. Uh kind of. And Dan, tell everybody who you are and what you do. So, I'm Dan. I'm a senior vehicle artist. So, after Alberto and his team have finished doing the concept, it gets passed over to the production art team, which I'm part of, and then depending on the size of the ship, like one, two, three, or even more people could be working on it to get it into your hands. But sometimes when you're the only person to do the interview, it seems like it's just you. Yeah, I get credit for all of it, but Alex does most of the work, to be honest. Alex Rest in peace. Alex is alive. It just It really for for It just for that episode, for some reason, the way you were talking about it and it sounded like he passed away,
- 00:02:27
and it was just really unfortunate. We still carry the trauma of that today. Alex, wherever you are, we love you. That was awkward. Alberto Yeah. We are going to showcase the concept portion of of ship of ship development. We are going to make something live, attempt to make something in an hour. I want to preface this that no ship can be concepted fully in an hour. Can't be concepted 50% can't be concepted 10% in hour, but we're going to do a short abbreviated kit bash version of the process, and you know, see a little bit about how they work and discuss their process and how that all goes. What are we going to make today? Exactly. Today we're going to make a motorbike that can accommodate both a human and a less human creature. And possibly on a sidecar. Possibly a sidecar? Maybe. All right. Is
- 00:03:16
this going to be like a hover bike or are you talking about a ground bike? Hover bike. Hover bike. So So So So a new hover bike kit bash from existing parts. Yes. Maybe some surprise elements. off pulse, we can can cannibalize basically what we have on the pulse. Show a bit of the early stages of the concepts and start to take stuff from that one and then go straight into a new one. This is generally the workflow that takes places in the first days of the creation of a concept before it actually got confirmed and got bringed over by a lot of iterations with art director, with everyone. And maybe we might see some older concepts that fell to the wayside while we were smart. So, with that, we're going to switch to the uh screen share and uh jump into uh what was the software Blender? Yes, this is Blender and we absolutely
- 00:04:04
will ignore what you're seeing right now. This is the main software I use during my work day along with Photoshop, but 3D uh in concept vehicle is generally the most important and most I spend 95 7% of my time here. What are we What are we looking at now? Well, you're looking at a cutie pie. You're looking at my dog. Which is a guest of every aspect of my life and I miss very very much. Oh, no, no, no, zoom in there. Let's see who who is this? This is Bran. This is Bran? Yes, and he's he's a 7-year-old good boy. Show them this. Show them this. Oh, yeah. No. And you made a little 3D print. Yeah. It's very cute. He couldn't He wouldn't come over without it. It's like his emotional support animal. Yeah, like you can't go on flights without it. All
- 00:04:51
right. You ready to work? Yes. All right. Let's cut the camera and see the full screen. See the glory. Talk us through it. So, uh I have pieces of the Pulse that we can try to reuse, see like reusing materials. We have three options that I really liked from the uh early Pulse uh production. There was a snow fighter one completely covered. Uh There was a different kind of much bigger um motorbike like uh Pulse. Uh You can see how we can uh test the animation work, how if there are compenetrations, if everything makes sense. We went in a different direction for the Pulse of something smaller. And there was another one more inspired to something that can actually fly rather than hover.
- 00:05:37
And yeah, we can take some uh pieces from here and there and see where we can go from here. So, just to be clear, that these were three potential concepts that you worked on for the pulse that were uh not chosen. Yeah, exactly. And we went for a more classic approach with the pulse that you know today. You can definitely see some Razer DNA in that first one up to the left there. trying to push into connectivity with Mirai. There was a lot of reference through the to the Fury as well. And I'm very satisfied with the real final result though. Made in Germany says, "Can the dog sit on the bike?" Well, if we remember at the end, we'll see. No, no, don't do don't do that. Save it for the end. It's a carrot at the end to keep them watching the whole show. We will actively look for
- 00:06:25
for a space for the dog. Okay. First thing first. So, what is the first thing? A saddle. A saddle? Now, do you always start with the cockpit, the saddle, the operator position? It really depends by by the brief, considering how like if I'm doing a capital ship, our approach will be completely different. But, considering how a motorbike works and how much of a human appears on a motorbike, which is a good 30%, the first things I will make sure I have in the right position are the the steering wheel. Oh, what's it called on a bike? Sorry, the handlebars. As my accent can tell you, I'm not British. And English is not my first language.
- 00:07:14
So, I'll make sure that I have them in the right position. I have the character fully rigged so I can move it. Generally, I also reference other animations from the game. So, sometimes we can recycle things. That's a that's a consideration like you can cut down if you can reuse an existing animation for the enter and exit. That cuts down development time. Yes, exactly. it will cost tremendously. And it's all a matter of balance. Can we afford it? Can is an important something particularly important that we have to do? And when you say can you afford it, I continuously have to clarify that we're talking about performance metrics. Yes. Instead it's it's relative development term. We use the terms cost and mean performance and not you know, money or whatnot. No,
- 00:08:01
no, eventually time. Time. I think one thing as well is when you have like these um like this library of mocapped entry exit anims we've got for different styles of vehicles. If you have something that's a little bit more unique in its stance like take for example like the Fury. Mhm. Like we had to make it so the seat would come out and lower down because it didn't really make sense for the player to like kind of scramble up and spin around in there. So it ended up adding some more interest into the entry exit anim. Right. Like because of that limitation. Just kind of welcome really. You know, they say necessity is the mother of invention. Yeah. When you can't do everything you want, you get Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi. When you can do anything you want, you get Phantom Menace, Attack
- 00:08:48
of the Clones, Revenge of the Sith. I say that with all love to the prequels. It's just sometimes not being able to do every silly thing you want is a bonus. It forces creativity. Yeah, yeah, for sure. One thing I wanted to mention cuz I know as someone I don't actually use Blender. Um the concept team heavily they heavily use Blender. It's really interesting to see the different style of workflow. Obviously Alberto is pretty wild with his hot keys like more so than most people but Yes, I I I said this the last time Alberto was on. You know, I've been I've been doing this type of show for going on nine years now, you know, intermittently and I've never seen anybody on Blender this fast. Yeah, he is like if If if you're watching this as a
- 00:09:36
Blender user and you're you're getting impostor syndrome throughout this, don't worry. We've got it as well. Uh-huh. But, the um one thing that makes Blender a really, really strong software for something like concept artists, um is its ability to just jump between different like sub-disciplines. So, like for us on production art, like if we need to sculpt something, we usually go into ZBrush. If we want to um light something, we'll go into the engine. If we want to I don't know. Do like a paint over, we'll go into Photoshop. Here, they've got grease pencil to their paint overs. They've got a sculpting tab. They've got material geometry nodes. They've got a lot of tools inside of the same software kit that allow them to get the visual goal of an object over to us really,
- 00:10:23
really fast. And it it's it's been something Blender has improved on a lot over the last couple of years, and it just keeps doing it. Do you have multiple versions of Blender on the taskbar? Yes. Uh different options. Sometimes, some tool is not updated to uh the last addon, so it's good to refer. Especially, there is an update every 3 months. A major one. So, not everything not every creator keeps it updated. Yeah. And And as Dan said, you know, Alberto uses uh Blender, but Dan does not. We are We're actually We're fairly tool agnostic here. We have a wonderful tools team led by Martin Senior and uh a whole host of folks uh who work with them, who build all sorts of integrations. Even the Even our our uh our partners at Well, I guess that now
- 00:11:11
they're part of the family, you know, CIG Montreal. Yeah. Uh you know, even then there's a tools team there, too. And they build things like Mighty Bridge and and stuff that just help one program talk to another program, you know, will let you import from one place and export to another place. So, uh it's one of the ways that we get operated scale. It's you You you slow down if you force everybody to use the same program. So, there are certainly benefits to it, but it it it limits who you can hire. It limits, you know, how fast they work. Some people like like Alberto can be this fast in Blender, but he might not be this fast in 3ds Max. Definitely not. Definitely not this fast No. You have like the different departments as well, like depending on your specialism, like certain software lends itself more to the other. So, just
- 00:12:00
for example, like Alberto mentioned that he does concept for weapon and vehicles. Yeah. The weapons team use Maya. The vehicle team uses Max. Got you. You know, that's one example of the pipeline across those three departments that are all quite closely linked. All completely different software packages. And then everybody touches like Substance Designer or something. Yeah, yeah, Substance is like uh a big pillar. And so is Photoshop. But the Adobe suite in general is kind of owns the texturing platform. I heard heard Photoshop recently updated the terms of service. They're now my new dad. Yeah, eight months down well. I'm going to better than a Boeing. Uh I'll get used to it. Yeah, I didn't actually see what that was about. I just saw the memes and I was like, "Okay, I'm going to just leave
- 00:12:46
the internet for a day and I'll come back and check." It's like Photoshop is now your new dad. Your old dad has to move out. He goes, "You have to call a You have to call Photoshop dad or sir at all times and maintain eye contact." I'm seeing him on the other Saturday. Alas. The less I say about generative AI here, the less likely I'll get in trouble. Yeah, we should concept a gravlab that doesn't blow up randomly. Can we do that? Is that within our ability? That doesn't blow up. Yeah, randomly. Oh. I'm not sure. I can make it that it blew up, but I'm not sure if I can decide when.
- 00:13:36
I'm going to say no. Yeah. Uh AstroPub mentions, you know, only if you use the cloud service. I saw that in the fact. It still bothers me that it doesn't say that in the TOS. And when when any uh legal proceedings happen, you know, they're going to go by the TOS or they're going to go by something in the in the fact that was on another part of the website. I just put it in the TOS and I'll feel better. Having it in a third party, or not third party, but having it in a separate fact just I am not We should We should We should We got to Let's bring up my camera real quick, Tom. I am not a legal expert, nor am I an expert in Adobe. And uh just having a little fun with the current uh social media uh frenzy re- relating to it. I'm sure it'll all work out fine. It usually does.
- 00:14:27
I'll bet putting that gun on the front there, or I think it was a gun. Was that Is it a gun? Yeah. It reminded me of something that I asked John if I was allowed to say, and I am allowed to say it, but um for those of you moaning about the turrets on the Polaris. They're not moaning. They have legitimate concerns. I Yeah, I agree with them. Jeez. did the directors. So Okay, back to my camera. We're um The views and opinions of Dan McCabe, once again, do not reflect those of Cloud Imperium Games, Roberts Space Industries, or me. Blame him. You're getting bigger guns. Specifically on the bottom turret. That's all I'm allowed to say. Bigger guns on which bottom turret? On the Polaris, underneath the um cockpit, there's like a big bottom turret. Yeah. Well, it's not big at the moment, but the guns will become big. I can't say how big, so don't ask.
- 00:15:17
But they won't look like toothpicks. Chris Chris Dinks is in chat, but they were moaning. You can address letters to Chris Danks. 6 Manchester Goods Yard Thank you, Danks, for standing up for me. I'm already really digging this dude. He's got like a It's almost got like a sci-fi uh easy rider feel there. Like they like the little lowrider motorcycles with the extended front wheel. I don't I don't I don't know if those have a name. Did they When when when the motorcycle has the the obviously further extended front wheel than might otherwise be normal, does that have a specific name? Swoop.
- 00:16:05
Yeah, in Star Wars they were the swoop bikes. I know if a if it has like larger rear wheels and it's Chopper! Thank you, Fiddicus. That's the word I was looking for. It's the word I was That was That's the word I was missing for. Wow. I have been off for 2 weeks. If it has like a bigger front wheel or rear wheel, I forget which way around it was, it's called a mullet as well. Really? We want wings. Give it wings. Little wings. That looks cool. Check if Ben agrees. Hey Ben, are you watching? Should we do wings? I think Ben would want wings.
- 00:16:56
Wouldn't be surprised if he just walked in, to be honest. He's in He's in messages me on Teams. Let me see. As I'm realizing that I don't know his I don't have his I don't know his Twitch handle. So, oh, there he is. Ben Curtis sent a team sent a message. Let me know if you need me to come and yeet Dan out of there for you. Look, not I'm not joking. That's what you said. Well, you know, I don't blame it. Uh Ben Parr, however, says yes, do wings. But Ben's a producer, so I really wasn't We we we can we can just leave him alone. But come on. Sincerely, I love producers. You know what? We're inmates of this
- 00:17:45
asylum without producers. I'm trying to think what we can do to make this thing look ridiculous. Like give it a spoiler or something. Yeah, something that's just so not motorbike. Uh Bad Bad Robot says, "Jared, does the UX UI UX team use Figma in their work?" I don't know if they still do. I I know it's I I I know there was a big exploration of it. We We have the UI UX team. There's There's several teams now. You know, I I know we've been showcasing uh Zane and Simon and Dr. Emily and and and Bone lately, but there's actually a a whole 'nother group in uh Montreal. Uh who work and I know I saw something months ago where they were looking It
- 00:18:34
was either looking to see if it can fit in the workflow or somebody was already using it. Like I said, we people use different tools. I don't know if it's actively being used today, though. Um Ben says, "If it's Gatac, it needs three or four wings and they need to move." Thank you. That I should have just shut up. You're just giving me PTSD. Oh, goody. I mean, last ti- last time I did a ship with Oh Jesus Christ. Why are you doing this to me? No, no, no. So so what what they don't know about that yet. Yeah. Um there's a Whoever did it, I hate you. It's Emma. I hate you. That is an Emma thing to do. Yes. Emma, I showed them your text. That's what they're reacting to.
- 00:19:22
Oh, it wasn't Emma's idea. He's just Oh, probably. Yeah, probably was, yeah. Seems like an Emma thing to do. And the viewers are like, "What the hell are they talking about?" Yeah, they're like Uh, it's an internal CIG thing. You'll learn about it later. Sorry. I want the Star Wars bike from the Stormtroopers in Empire Strikes Back. Do Stormtroopers have bikes in Empire Strikes Back? The speeder bikes were in Return of the Jedi. I don't remember any bikes. Mhm. So, watch we'll watch it back and they'll be like a pedal bike. There was There was one from the toys. There was There was the little There was a little like bouncing one from that was in the toys that was that was from Hoth. I don't think I don't think that was actually in the movie. I think it was just in the toy line. No, I've no idea.
- 00:20:10
Don't be like that, Ben part. We are doing wings. And they have to move. And they have to move. That's what Ben Is that what you're doing now? already said. I do not. I was going to say, what are you doing? Are they guns? Like, I don't know. No, no, they are They will be wings eventually. Should make them like flap. You know what I mean? No, no. No. No. What do you mean? Like make them like a bird. Yes. Ah, you Ah, you want them to animate like this? Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's That's a stretch, but I I'm I'm open to ideas. Hopefully Charles is bad on You know what? Let's commit to that idea. Oh, no, now it looks like very June now,
- 00:20:58
this, doesn't it? Which is fine. What a cool I I like the way it looked back and looked like you gave him a really long cape at first. Making like the Do you want him with a cape? Well, I want all characters with a cape. I'm still I'm still fighting that fight with Ian. We need more capes. Like he's playing a piano. Speed at which he's like typing on this keyboard now. I hope the mic can't pick it up. I hope he can. It's so satisfying. Uh expat expat drat and expat drat expat drat. Oh my gosh. I have been off for 2 weeks. Uh says Dragonfly mark 2. The Dragonfly was our first kind of the the Well, the Dragonfly was our first hoverbike, but it's it's original influence uh from the great Paul Jones uh Paul
- 00:21:47
uh who's enjoying life in uh Canada now. He went to work for Ubisoft, I think. Um he originally designed it on based on his chopper. So, yeah similar influence. The very first hoverbike was based on a chopper. And then we And then all the hoverbikes since then have been more modern kind of the less utilitarian, but more sleek like the X1 and things. Yeah, like like like like little rocket stuff and stuff like this. But yeah, the the the the brief when we when Alberto and I were discussing this earlier is like, "Let's get back and see if we can do another chopper. We haven't done a chopper in a while." But obviously with a not with a Drake aesthetic, with a with a get tech or alien aesthetic, which is what he's doing here. Are you satisfied with the cape? Oh, yeah. Cape looks great. I was quite impressed with how
- 00:22:37
Blender had a brush to just make ripples like that. Isn't that a Gabe? Careful, we're getting into ornithopter territory now. I just got to Single pilot ornithopter? This is pretty cool. Yeah. I especially appreciate how long that cape is cuz It's very on to no, do not fix it. Do not fix it. Okay, you you want me to make it worse? This is SCL. We don't make good things here. Okay. Ridiculous. Like that was actually a conversation I had once, you know, when we were doing one of these couple years ago. Somebody asked me, "Well, what happens if they make something that we actually want to make?" And I'm like, "This is SCL. I promise that won't happen."
- 00:23:26
I think it's about to. We only make bad stuff. Silly things. This is This is pretty cool, though. Do you remember like when Corey made that bowl of noodles with a knife? Sure I remember that. Yes. It was like a Halloween special, I think. Okay. So, is that a gun in the front or is or It's whatever you want it to be. It's a bit small though, isn't it? That is. No, I don't want to go too close to the I don't think I I know I'm not feeling I I feel like the gun Give it three guns in like a triangle formation. I feel like Yeah. Now we're gaming. I feel like maybe instead of the gun like maybe it could be a an intake or something something that more approximates the wheel shape that would be at the front of a traditional
- 00:24:17
It is not easy with the wheel. Okay, but no, you want to make a wheel, it'd be a box. Like make it make it like a special kind of intake or something. That's what we did with the pulse because we did the engine so that with that particular shape so they could connect culturally with a wheel despite not being a wheel. Yeah, I don't know. What can we do here? Maybe it's just not as long a a gun or something. Let's use this leg this one for a bit. Let me see if Bank Credit is saying anything. Oh, Bank Credit is saying Oh, no. Maybe maybe lose the pulse front forks. No, no, no, I I like the front forks. Sorry, Ben. I Ben on that one. I lost the the ceiling kitbash, so I have to use the the pulse kitbash. all right, he says bring more arrowhead into it.
- 00:25:04
arrowhead What What what's that what's that mean, Ben Curtis? What's bring more arrowhead into it? We're all scratching our heads One thing that confused we all look right now, Ben. Look at this. Look at Tom I mean, he's going to make so many good so much good stuff from here. What does arrowhead mean? One thing um when Alberto was doing this, like it gives some most production artists like excitement and fear at the same time. Like one small decision they make here based like to like change the Yeah, it will be like it will be just a pain to like actually get into game. But there's one thing we always want to make sure we do right, but it can
- 00:25:52
It can It can give you a massive headache. It's just like, why can't it can it just be simpler? No. I mean, with the civilian I gave you a couple of headaches. Uh so swordfish pilot says, "How is the workflow with LODs? Does the artist This is chat went Does the artist build a high poly model and then move to palms and substance?" That's for him. Um how does the LOD work? Yeah, yeah, well where does the LODs come in? They're they're at the very end, really, aren't they? Yeah, yeah, LODs are like just before we like we we put it into game, really. So, we have like our white box, gray box, LOD zero, and final LOD is the stage where LODing would happen. And so, how do you make the LODs? So, LODs typically would start with So, I'm assuming if you're asking about LODs, you've looked at our production
- 00:26:39
art workflow a little bit. If not, there's there's some resources cuz it's a little bit unique, but we basically start by removing our chamfers or like our bevels, which are like our small edges, which give the nice little polished effect to our edges. and our like small palms, so like our palm lines and our like main decals that like are quite subtle. And then that kind of gets you to LOD one, and then the rest is kind of a more traditional LOD in pipeline. Well, we used to do, you know, back in the olden days, we used to do that by hand. You know, I I I'd go with I'd go I'd go past, you know, like Pat Pat Salerno and stuff, and he'd be in there, you know, creating the LODs for things. But we have a new we have a new LOD tool, don't we? Um And that automates a bunch of that. Uh yeah, but I like I I was I'm not sure like how much I'm allowed to talk about that, because I just
- 00:27:26
brought it up, so you're allowed to talk about it. Okay. Um yeah, we have like a tool that's like developed by the Montreal guys, which tries to use Houdini to automate a lot of the process. It played an absolutely pivotal role in getting the Polaris flyby for Fleet Week. Um so, amazing work from the Montreal like um tech art guys Ooh, I like what you're doing there. Yeah, that's a it's it's easy to forget that you know, development time isn't just in making the things that the players get to see that that the things that go directly into the hands. It's also the time we spend revising process and building tools. Like we mentioned we mentioned uh Martin senior and his tool team. We mentioned that that that the tool team at Turbulent. Uh things like Mighty Bridge, you know,
- 00:28:13
super help up help our development time tremendously. Things like that new that new LOD tool. Yeah. That help speed that stuff up. And it's why, you know, I think the biggest, you know, the the the biggest question anybody ever has for Star Citizen and stuff is, you know, when? But the second question is, how are you going to do everything that you want to do? And that's because, you know, this stuff progresses exponentially isn't quite the right word. It's it's it's I don't know what the I suppose it is still right. You just don't know what the number is. I I guess there's there's a level to like the quality bar is always improving cuz as technology gets better it affords you more. Yeah, the point the point I'm trying to make is, you know, we make we made more in 2016 than we did in 2013. We made more in 2017 than we did in
- 00:29:01
2016. Uh I think folks are already seeing, you know, with 323, you know, 2024 is already a banner year for Star Citizen and then when you see 4.0 next and uh what comes after that uh that you'll learn about eventually but not from me. 2024 is going to go down as one of the major years in Star Citizen's development and that's because of that exponential growth, all the tools, all the process, all the, you know, all the stuff that we learned to do this better. Yeah, for sure. after year and year. So. Yeah, it was something I noticed when I was on um I helped fix some issues um on the retaliator modules and stuff. Um and it was really interesting to see the contrast between like a really really old ship and like trying to bring it up to spec with some of the new processes.
- 00:29:49
And like things like the mini map, you when when you how do you like as a, you know, a company go about implementing all of that um new tech onto a used older asset? artist cleans it up. You don't have to clean that up. Yeah, who's going to clean it up? Yeah, I'll clean it up, don't worry. I thought it was a cool part. Yeah, it It gives me the headaches. I just take the painkillers. I give you the shilling and you're happy about it. I accept it. But yeah, things like the mini map were um were really really cool to bring in and like I just loved it. I remember when I first dropped into game and I saw it in the top left and I was like, "Oh my god, this is awesome." you know, just in the editor. Uh Chaos Gabriel in the chat, your message is yeah, you got a perfectly normal harmless message but the auto mod
- 00:30:37
is blocking you because you're using the word naked. In case you're wondering why your messages aren't going through. What is his question? Oh, no, it's not a question. He's just talking about, you know, bikes bikes on the Autobahn and stuff like that, but it Oh, I see. The The poor Twitch automod is like apparently it doesn't like the word naked. Sorry, Cass Gabriel. So, okay, we have a base. That's kind of majestic. This is Now, the important part. Oh, yeah, how the hell are you going to get us? I was thinking You You still got half an hour. Or in the front, or in the side, or in the rear. No, it needs to be in the front. He needs to It has to be the front. Like like like a little like a little R2 I get the vibe. Yes.
- 00:31:26
So, let's cut this part away. Yeah, the cape cannot be compromised. I mean, I would have put the cape on Brun. Oh, I see. No. No. No, you need to put him in the front. There he is. Yo, there he is, Brun. Is that not the thickest thing? So, first you just have to wonder Yes, I have a 3D model of my dog. No, I didn't 3D scan it because it cannot understand to not move. Are you calling my my boss? No. Who are you? And yes, I rigged it. No, no, I'm just holding. I thought you were calling someone. No, no, no. Callum sent me a message says don't forget to spot for Brun, but I didn't have to remind you. Callum, he's got it.
- 00:32:14
You You really think I'll Brun You really think I'm going to forget about Brun? It's all right, it's free, but yeah, yeah. I can't let him look like he's driving, too. What if he is the one driving and you're the passenger? Gabriel Is there a little handlebars? Take my sorry. Yeah, the little handlebars. And and yeah yes for for for for folks wondering this is not a sneak peek of of pets or anything like that. This is Alberto's personal dog that we allow him to bring on the show. Cuz we like dogs. I've never met Frank. He seems nice. He's a good boy. Give him sunglasses or goggles. Oh yes, I also have the reference saved
- 00:33:02
for this. So ahead of everyone else. I like dags. I saw that originally and like on the as soon as we started someone went do you like dags and then at the beginning I was like I like dags. Dogs, yeah I like dogs. Oh, who's calling? Oh, I butt dialed Callan. Sorry Callan. I normally don't get to have my phone in my hand during the show. It's on my very first uh What do they call them? Travelers? Oh yeah. Yeah. Had my first run-in with them a couple weeks ago. Oh, safety first.
- 00:33:49
Of course. I would never put these lives at Oh my god, I love it. It wants a watermelon texture, doesn't it? Is this going to be an actual vehicle we can get? That's up to you and how many times you message John Crew on Twitter at at _johncrew. If you message John Crew every day for 3 months, but you can't break. If you miss a day, it doesn't count. If you message John Crew every single day on Twitter for 3 months straight. They gave it a good go with that space trolley. Do you remember the space trolley with the gun on it? But, never made it. But, you don't have a Twitter. Well, I
- 00:34:41
mean, good thing it's free to actually might not be free to sign up anymore. Who knows what Who knows. I am immensely proud. Uh E, uh big Bingo Winchester. Uh there's an E at the end, John Crew. Give it like a next like a strut. C R E W E And then you have to give him Uh basically, we decide what ships to put in production by how angry John Crew is when he comes by my desk. So. That's secretly how all ship decisions are made. It's a rage. And then you have to give him a little
- 00:35:38
visor as well. With goggles, yeah. Space Mom Callie says, "I just got here. What am What am I seeing?" Uh you're seeing game development in action. That's John knows what my price is. He just has to make my Star Liner. Once he makes my Star Liner You'll leave me alone. All All of this stops. All of this goes away. I noticed you have You can stop this at any time, John Crew. Let me talk right to John Crew. You can stop this anytime you want, John Crew. You just You just make the Star Liner. You put that thing out. Or the Jalopy. Either one. You make the Star Liner or you make
- 00:36:27
the Jalopy. You put those things out and this can all stop. Really, it's on you. I noticed you have like is that a Starline trophy statue thing over there? Oh yeah, that was a that was a gift from a backer. That's really cool. Okay. Yo. Oh, that's good enough. Yo. I'm leaving. Uh Astropub says, "What about the PTV 9000 SUX?" That was the Graycat 6000 SUX. Uh and um I actually went back to it uh last year, Astropub. Uh
- 00:37:15
to So, I've made I've I've made a flying Graycat. Yeah, yeah, you showed me. That actually that that actually works with the pipe system and all that stuff like this. Uh but I was basically like I wonder how much have I learned by recording all these interviews and and all the all the stuff that I've done. And it turns out I was able to reverse engineer the pipe system from it it it the the game thinks it's a it's an arrow, but I've got a I've got a Graycat PTV that flies. it only works on a very old build? worked well well once they started the resource network stuff I it's it's a yeah, it broke all the stuff that I knew how to do. I got to spend more time with Torsten. I got to figure out how to do it. Ooh. I think maybe maybe we can do some variants. Yeah, sure. But yes, I do have I do have a about a
- 00:38:02
year ago I I finally I I went back and tried to make the Graycat 6000 SUX and I made it flying. Made it fly. It looks way better than it used to do. The wheels and the the wheels animate down when it when it lands the the wheels come down and then when it takes off the wheels rotate up and become thrusters. I'm pretty very of it. Yeah, it looks sick some DeLorean Back to the Future. Yeah. I got rudimentary skills. Most Most of what I have is just not knowing what I can't do. When you said like I have rudimentary skills, I thought you like going to make some like threat. Yeah. I have a specific set of skills. That would be the worst hitman threat in the world.
- 00:38:48
You don't want to mess with me. What color do you want the wing? I have rudimentary skills. It'll hurt more because I don't know what I'm doing. What does chat want? What What color does chat What What What color is What color is chat? I just realized they're going to say every color, aren't they? They're not going to have a consensus. Uh uh Yeah. Purple. Ooh, purple. I probably can't do that iridescent in Blender. Yes, I can. Yeah. Cuz cuz that that's really the the hallmark of the alien ships. They're that cool. Yeah, you're right, actually. They're Purple pearlescent. Yeah, the viewing angle tint stuff. Let's make an experiment. No Helldivers
- 00:39:38
black. I'm tired of black spaceships. I'm tired of black spaceships, gray spaceships, black spaceships, gray. How we We do iridescent. It's fine. So, do you like choose your like gradient ranges and stuff off the camera? And it will do based on the angle. So, like now they are Yeah, I see it's cuz blue, yeah. But you can do also some fancier ones. Oh, yeah, that's cool, isn't it? Ain't it? look at that, you delivered. It's what they wanted. I I want to This is another example of why Blender
- 00:40:26
is a very good tool for concept because in Max that would have been a pain in the ass to do. But um Everything Max would be a pain in the Yeah, it is. Some Max genius is going to correct me now and go, "Well, actually, precious 20 bucks." Actually. Well, actually. It's fine as it is. We just don't have the viewport power. I feel like it needs um But does it have like a back hover plate thing? You know what I mean? Like for the rear. Like in between the exhaust, is there like some kind of like Yeah, it's like quite a void there. Should we put
- 00:41:13
something for it to like balance with? I would put it back. That's what Put whatever you The cape you just made. Cape. Oh, yeah, that's fine. Oh, yeah, look at all this. Yeah, there is all this stuff. We can have a gun that shoots backwards. Mm. Uh Elf wins says, "Question, would it be possible to make a segment about the scheduling planning scheduling?" We actually did an episode gosh, years ago. Uh it's still on our YouTube. If you If you go If you go to the I I believe the Friday show was called Happy Hour when we did it. So, if you If you look uh on the YouTube on our YouTube channel, but we actually did a whole hour with uh Eric Eric Aaron Davis and Oh, I can't I can't remember who else
- 00:42:02
where we went through how producers make schedules and and plan for development work. And it's it's the same process for just about everything. So, it it's I mean, you're asking specifically for ships, but it's the it's the same information. changed a little bit, you know, there's there's there's there's agile and there's waterfall and stuff like that. But, for the most part, I think it's still fairly accurate. And it's it's a decent primer if you were curious. That's up on the YouTube channel. I got in a lot of trouble for doing a show with producers and how to make a schedule. Nothing. There were I think there were only like citizens that enjoyed it. They're like, "Why are you doing a show with producers?" And I'm like, "Because
- 00:42:49
they're essential to the development of any video game." And Producers I've I've the uh Yeah. When you're in a meeting, producers are the the like the comedians that keep it all together. Like, they know how to run the meeting in a way that keeps everyone like It There's nothing more boring than looking at like schedules and stuff like that for like artists, so they do a really good job of making it fun for us. Sorry, I took a decision here of Yeah, I think that's a good one. Yeah. Brad is now the sole pilot. It's went a bit far from what we started from. I think it's Jim. Uh I don't want it to looks like it's choking it, though. Yeah, yeah, you you need to be under his arm. You have to be under the arm. Yeah. All right. So, you have to lower the hands so the hands are There you go.
- 00:43:42
I You know, I grew up in the era of Benji movies and stuff, you know, and you know, and there's no rule that says a dog can't fly a hover bike. I didn't say that rule either, so yeah, I'd say we go for it. I think we would live in a better world. rule that says a dog can't pilot a hover bike. And do we want to consider Now, you we got Yeah, got we got to watch out from over producing this, but do we want to consider like a gun rack or something like any kind of storage? At the moment, I think we can use the same as Kamata we found on the on the pulse that you that is the seat like a real motorbike. So, click and clicks up. Yeah,
- 00:44:28
that would make sense. But now, I will still consider a something that shoots backwards, but like a missile rack. A a chafe or you Yeah, yeah, yeah. there's some counter with with countermeasures. Oh, okay. Yeah, I can do the countermeasures. Can we do like I don't um Will we have enough time to make animation of the wings like folding out? Ah. Yeah, 15 minutes. Okay. It won't take him long. Can we get the German Shepherd's name? It's not a German I was going to let Alberto say the name. Yeah, yeah, yeah. A mixed breed. Bran. Mhm. Bran. Bran. Bran. Bran is tiny. He's not like He's not like a big German Shepherd. Yeah, he's literally a scale one to one. Yeah. It's a 10 kilos dog.
- 00:45:16
Well, that's dog was a German Shepherd Rottweiler mix. The thing he weighed 200 lb. He weighed I don't know what that's A dog has no business Yeah, I don't know what I don't know what that's I don't know what that's in kilograms, but but yeah, he's a he was a big big dog who did not understand why he couldn't sit in your lap. Bran can sit where he wants. 200 is about 90 kg. Yeah, it's a heavy dog. Yeah, that's pretty hardcore. And he was as dumb as the day is long. I bet he was terrifying for like people He was the sweetest dog. I miss that Except when he tried to sit on me. That was less fun. Here we go. I think he's going to want to make that. So, you want animations? I really do.
- 00:46:05
Look, hide the Hide the Then Curtis did say the wings had to move. I need to change. Sorry? I said Ben Curtis did say the wings had to move. Oh, he also said a full rainbow, please. Oh, for the material. Sorry, Ben. I wasn't watching my chat. I got you. Is that full rainbow? Well, it is from one point to another side. really cool. I I I'll Yeah, you get it. I really like that. Yo. That looks really cool. And I like that. Oh, there you go. There you go. So, yeah, depending on what angle you look at it. So, this is the distance. And on the front you have the
- 00:46:54
It's very um What What is it? Xperia. It's intense. Oh, and your So, it's your the little little hot doggy. So, is that like bottom color choosing your your main like like straight on angle color and then Um the rest of it was choosing the camera like offset color. I tell you the first the last and I tell I tell him to go around it from the farthest possible path or the nearest possible path. I'm so glad you're here. I don't really I cannot talk in public. Yeah, that's why we run. Animations. This is going to look mint. This is pretty nice. So, this is the arrival. So, I guess we put it at 50.
- 00:47:46
Chat's reminding you that you haven't restored the cape. Oh, yeah. Yeah, get that back. Sorry, chat. Oh, wait. That's on Reddit. Let's check on the guy. What what what shape is he in? You okay? You okay, guy? He's fine. You you okay? Not too much. He asked me to do it, by the way. not. You're making it worse, everybody. The wings. Okay. Where were we? I don't even know. Still not as bad as spider crotch. If I survived spider
- 00:48:33
crotch, I can survive anything. I'll have to ask you after after this what Wait, there's a generation that doesn't know spider crotch? I'm sorry I brought it up then. Yo, that looks very rail and that, isn't it? Oh, what if it lands on the on these things? Yeah, that's Oh, the wings become skids? Yeah. Oh. That's pretty cool. Oh. Okay, let's save this and let's see. Have you saved? No. Save, for the love of God. Chat wants to know where the dog's cape is. Oh, could we do the cape, but it's like in his face, so he can't see anything? Well, he's not driving, so it's fine. I knew this was distracting, but it's
- 00:49:24
important. The dog has priority. I will always support this. What color should Brown's cape be? I think it should be different. I was thinking what's Brown's favorite color, but he will probably answer gray. Cuz he's color blind. Or so I thought. No, you have to have it like up into the face. Yeah, so he can't see anything. We take our job very seriously, guys. That's so good. Making games is supposed to be fun. It is. Like if playing games is supposed to be fun, then making games are supposed to be fun. There's There's
- 00:50:11
a lot of I mean, I don't I don't need to relitigate a lot of the press around the gaming industry from the last year, year and a half, but you know, there are there are there are There There aren't enough times where where gaming making games is fun, so whenever we can make it fun, I'm a big proponent of doing it. This is maybe a little too much time on the cape, though. No, he's he's done enough. It's perfect. I strike my last comment from the record. Okay, there's a good chance the community can convince John to let us do this. Remember message message a message x.com/johncrewe
- 00:51:04
every day for 90 days. If you miss a day, it doesn't count. I saw someone say they wanted like a gold cape. Can we do it like PBR correct gold, so it's like metallic gold? Sure. Why not? Oh, so so here are some of your compatriots who are watching on this stream. That's absolutely right. Well, let's see. Laith says we need a better lead. Oh, you can always leave, Laith. Oh. Okay, so oh, so Laith is talking crap. Hold on. What's he saying? Can we Can we take Can we take a a moment and and go to the camera? Laith, I see you. I I see you talking crap in the chat here about Alberto and and Dan here. I think Alberto and Dan have something to
- 00:51:51
something to tell you. Laith, it was me. Do you want to tell him what was it? He knows. It was Alberto. He's screaming right now. It was Alberto. Yeah, he is screaming right now. Look at how gold that is. You they wanted gold. Beautiful. Okay. I think How's the animation looking? Okay, nice. So, is that like the landed animation and then this is the flying animation the one we've been modeling? Yes, when it lands you can climb into the back. Yeah. Oh, I see. Oh, but you need to you need to clear the back though. Do you need to do those things? Can you rotate that down?
- 00:52:38
Yeah, probably. Um you got 8 minutes. It's enough. It's enough for Alberto the fastest blender in the in the west. I'm just trying to figure out what the what what direction we're in. I I Manchester's generally referred to as the north though. In the northwest, yeah. Yeah, northwest. Unless you're Scottish in the middle of the south. Fair. Yeah, that's fair enough. Yeah, that's cool. Yeah, I can move it. Because it's alien because it's alien it has like the the hover technology so the parts don't Yeah. We have some mechanics obviously. Call it space magic. Yeah, the mechanics can be some backups and stuff. You don't have to have Yeah, the general rule when you're using like the Jian like space magic cuz we don't really like to have space magic in
- 00:53:27
the game is that it if it has power it should be connected to something physically. You can't call it space magic. It has a name. I don't remember what it is, but Astro Pub probably does. I don't know what it Astro Pub, what's the sheen on space magic called? Yeah, the rule is you can't if it's connected to the ship it has to have Sorry, if it's got power it should be connected to the ship. So, like for example, the Sulans wings can't just be floating like Rayman. You know, it needed like a mechanism to hold it up. Well, grav lev is what causes it to fly, but other ships have grav lev. I'm talking about the thing that that lets like this this the steps go down like fly the navigator. And stuff. That that that that lets the the parts be disconnected from one
- 00:54:15
another. That's not called grav lev. Grav lev is what allows it to to fly. We just call Well, I know we just refer to it as sheen tech, but I don't know if it has like a proper name. You referred to it as space magic just like 2 minutes ago. No, I said we don't have space magic. We make a point of if it's floaty, it it can't have power associated. So, like steps going into the Sulans is uh is okay, but wings know if I don't know if Mark Gibson's watching. Mark, do you know what it's called? You message me. Can't remember. Mark Mark will be clocked off like ages ago now. He's done for the week. Mark. Alberto's actually messaging Mark was messaging him all day now. This is amazing. Look at that. Okay, so
- 00:55:07
from this angle the the the red The only thing I'm not super sold on is the red's a little too hot doggy for me. Hot doggy? It looks like hot to blue. Yeah, I do like purple or like We should still keep the full rainbow, but I mean and like the the resting color should be like a purple to blue. So, put it on the side. I think that's good cuz it means it doesn't match the red cape reverse, so it helps with that. Do we want to keep the red cape? Yeah, I think so. Or should we have both in gold? No, no, no. No, bronze gold. Bronze gold.
- 00:55:55
He's a golden boy. That's cool. Can we do it give it some dramatic lighting, do you think? Yeah, it's quite good. It's just some lighting and then and then give it a full spin around, you know, so the people can make the gifts. And then we'll call it a show. There was a moment earlier this week where I was like, "Hey Alberto, if you know, if if if you could if you can't like get it done in an hour, we could always just come back next week, you know, I've got to fill a show every every Friday." He was like, "Maybe, but I think I can do it in an hour." Oh, yeah, yeah, he can do it. Now I look cocky. If you say this kind of stuff. It's not It's not being cocky, it's called being good.
- 00:56:43
You really look like the most arrogant guy ever every time I do a an ISC. His concepts are just so good. My concepts are just so You're You're Dan. I'm all right. I Alex is good, but it makes me look good. He did. It's an inside joke. We're not explaining this. So they call it graph plate. That's what the tech is called. Thank you, chat. Just to be upbeat. Darker. Yes, and for those of you who have watched Stars in My Eyes for the last eight or nine years, I did say something nice and positive about a co-worker. I've been off
- 00:57:34
and I'm off my game. I apologize. I won't do it again. I'm disappointed you didn't make my meat ship, Alberto. That's hot. I know it's Emma. I didn't have to say it. It's Emma. That's Emma? No doubts. Emma, I will not do meat ships. Here we go. What are you doing? Changing the cameras and Changing the lights. Wow. The lights. You pressed it.
- 00:58:22
You liar. Okay, now I see something. The dog is a better pilot than most of the player base. Let's be real. At least better than Captain Burbank. But especially my dog is a cutie pie and everyone has to know. was fine. Yes, um Alberto's dog uh brand is a cutie pie and that is supported by Robert Space
- 00:59:12
Industries, Clayton Prime Games, and its subsidiaries. Okay, I think we're good. How about that? Yeah. Yeah. There we go. All right. With 1 minute to spare. Someone slow him down. Yeah, yeah, yeah, give him the give him the give him the the turntable. Be better about real-time shadows. As if that's what the program's for. It's not. Play the animation. Play Next month. Next month. Really? Yeah, they release Eevee 2.0.
- 00:59:59
And that has better volumetrics and better shadows. When you go static, it's still horrible. Just Let's give Let's give Alberto a little clap. Come on. That's been Star Citizen Live Game Dev making [ __ ] up number four. Uh this was Alberto Petronio uh Petro Petronio. Jeez. Alberto Petronio on the on the keys doing the work. That's been Dan Mc Cabe doing all the talking and taking all the credit. And I've been Jared. I'm your host who at the end of every week goes back to the other building and asks if I still have a job. thanks for watching. We'll be back next week with another Star Citizen Live. I don't know what it is yet. And if you're waiting for Inside Star Citizen, that returns on July 20th.
- 01:00:47
We're in the process of filming a bunch of shows for that now. Can't wait to show you as we approach a pretty important milestone for Inside Star Citizen coming up. Did I say July 20th? I meant um June 20th. What month is this? June. June. I meant June, not July. Feels like December. Nobody ever looked at Jared Huckaby and said, "That guy knows what month it is." Uh so, thanks for watching. Take care. And we'll see you next week, everybody. Bye. Bye, guys.
