[Music] w hello and welcome to another edition of lore makers Guide to the Galaxy uh my name's Adam Weezer I am associate writer at Cloud Imperium games uh based here in the Los Angeles office and for those of you who've never seen the show before this is a chance for a member of the lore team to sit down and basically give
- 00:00:54
you a guided tour of one of the hundred systems that you'll be seing either in Squadron either in the Gamestar citizen or in Squadron 42 um this is just a chance for us to kind of show the the depth that we're giving to these through com the history and the astronomy that goes into uh everything that we're we're doing here so uh today we're going to a an interesting system for for a handful of reasons and kind of a contradictory system too in in a few ways as we'll be discussing it's a system that's in a a fantastic location but it has a real real terrible reputation um yeah it's also probably today best known as the home world for the headquarters of uh Drake interplanetary today we're going to go off and we're
- 00:01:41
going to go visit the Magnus system so we're just going to go into the search bar here type in Magnus and let's just uh Zoom right over and see where we're at now when I say it's in a great location it's because um when we go to this uh this big level here you're going to see exactly what I mean so we're going to turn on large jump point it's got uh three jump Point connections which are uh very important you've got one to Ellis you've got one to Stanton which you're already familiar with uh playing uh uh the prison un universe and going to port osar and then it's got um a medium jump Point here connection to terara but the reason why this is such a such a important and kind of great location to be in because if I drop off the the medium jump point we just focus
- 00:02:29
on that you'll see that Magnus is right in the heart of the large jump Point run between soul and the Terrace system so there's a lot of a lot of shipments that going to be going through here which makes you think like this would be a a very important system or it could be a very economically strong system considering its location to Stanton and Tera uh Ellis and and everything else that's that's uh that on this path here but for for years now for for a century and a half this uh system has mainly almost been known as a dangerous Frontier system uh it's uh the official uh one of the official uh kind of like slogans for the system is uh Magnus on the edge of the unknown even though here it is right between two the most
- 00:03:16
important systems uh in the uee now um as we go into Magnus again it's it's strange that it's a frontier system considering where it's located um but one of the reasons for that is because it has kind of a a convoluted history to it um when it was first discovered the UE uh the U took a great interest in it this happened in uh 2944 uh uh 20 uh excuse me 2499 the system was first discovered so it's been about around for a little over 450 plus years but when it when we first came about it um the government really really was interested in it because of the star at the center here now if we zoom on in uh this is a main sequence a k type star uh also known as an orange
- 00:04:06
dwarf and even today uh scientists like to focus on these stars as being the potential uh home for extraterrestrials for for for alien life forms now the reason this is is because the these stars are very stable they have an extended life period even compared to the Sun at the center of the Soul system these Stars the K types live for about 15 to 30 billion years on average while our son lasts lives closer to 10 billion years so it it's here for a long time which means there's a chance for life to develop it's also smaller it's it's cooler it's less luminous uh this one in particular um it's the Luminosity is like uh 34 uh points to to what our soul is if our if our sun is one this is 3
- 00:04:59
for uh Luminosity when it when it gets compared to that uh it also star kype stars like this also emit less ultraviolet radiation which is also a a good way to you know another thing that's not helping impede the development of life in the system now uh unfortunately when the the government start to look at the The Wider Magnus system even with this promising star at the center they did not find life they found uh three planets um only one of them boria which we'll get to in a little bit um was was even habitable for us but they they still it it it needed to be terraformed but it still had the potential to be habitable uh that said the the up still decided to hold on to this system because of a handful of factors the first being right here
- 00:05:49
Magnus one now this is described as a kind of a small rocky planet it doesn't have an atmosphere but uh what it did have were tons of valuable minerals and this really uh kind of got the the government's interest so um the makeup of the minerals that they were starting to pull off this planet has actually LED scientists to believe that it's just not another small rocky world that this is actually uh potentially a chthonian planet now chthonian planets are are interesting because they are former gas giants or in this case most likely a hot Jupiter that was within the frostline of the system and the orbit uh migrated in until it got stuck here close to the Sun now when it get got this close to the Sun basically the heat uh burned off the
- 00:06:38
the gases outer layer of the planet just leaving the rocky core at the center now this is a process known as hydram hydrodynamic Escape uh which which led to this mineral Rich core of this former hot Jupiter sitting here at the Magnus uh Magnus one at the at the at the center of the system next to the Sun so uh that that was one of the reasons they decided to uh to hold on to this system the second was because borea could be uh terraformed and that happened pretty much right away as they as they started to dig into it a little bit they realized um there's no life here but we can still make something of it it's a terrestrial rocky planet with a with a number of different uh climates uh locations on it so they began the terraforming process in
- 00:07:27
2533 and they decided to leave this as a military classified system so um not a lot of extra foot traffic or or ship traffic excuse me could could kind of flow through this system now uh the rest of this if we just back out here for a second when we talk about the history of the magnet system we're really talking about boreo we're talking about the second planet here there is a third one out in the on the fringes here this is Magnus 3 it's a super Jupiter with the beautiful multicolored atmosphere to it uh and and some rumors that Pirates kind of like to collect in the L Grange ports points there for for Little Pirate meetups but uh that's uh that's kind of the standard stuff here for the system when we're talking about Magnus we're talking about borea and what has really happened here over the subsequent
- 00:08:15
uh uh centuries basically so in 2533 the U uh the upe starts to uh terraform this system and as soon as it's habitable they begin to move people in to turn it into the Navy shipyard for uh uh for the for the UE the upe Navy at the time so they're building ships here they're they're bringing in people to populate these factories um and it's it's going great here it's it's kicking off it's like a a good 50 60 years of straight boom where um this is basically the the center for for ship for uh for ship building for for the military uh for the Navy here um well as as the years kind of went on obviously the people were coming in they were starting to have kids and a natural uh homegrown
- 00:09:04
population started to emerge on boria even though it was still pretty contained because again it's military classified so you're not just getting people flying in from all over the place you have to be selected to come here and and settle down but one of the people that that kind of grew up on Bor at this time was a woman by the name of of of oelle Krueger and kind of coming from this uh very blue collar industrial uh labor force that was very prominent there at this time she started a custom machine uh part shop here uh and called it uh a name you're probably familiar with uh Krueger Intergalactic now uh Krueger Intergalactic has recently made the forier into into doing ships and and other items like this but back when they first started they just specifically made very specific items for larger manufacturers this was ideal when you're
- 00:09:54
here working with all these um working with the the Navy Building ships and these other these other larger ship companies maybe it's easier for for Krueger to actually make some small parts uh right here on the planet so that way um it relieves the stress on some of these bigger conglomerates it also is a great way for Krueger to get their name out there and to work with some of these kind of like Empire wide uh uh companies and they they were able to do this because their stuff was was so was so precise and and done so well they they make everything uh from like the firing pins that are in the be uh p8 AR which is a ballistic rifle used by the by the uee Marines now this like I said this was all well and good uh about the mid 27th century so around 26 in the mid
- 00:10:44
2600s um a lot of stuff has happened and one of the things that the the UE government at that time decided to do was to move the ship manufacturing away from borea and into the killing in system now when they did this they basically killed the entire economy of the the boria planet because that's that's really what they had there um uh people basically fled the system and droves because there weren't other a lot of in Industries there um and uh population dwindled some reports have it down to less than a 100,000 people actually living on that on this planet about this time uh and again there were a lot of factors here that led to the shipyards moving away from boria this is the middle of the 27th century uh the
- 00:11:32
first Taran War has has come to an end Messer has ascended there's all these other factors that kind of play into it but boria definitely bore the brunt of uh of that decision uh somebody who did benefit from that decision was Krueger Intergalactic and that's part of the reason why you you even know their name is because as the ship manufacturers and all and as these industrial Powers basically left to go to Killian there was all this excess uh space and high-tech equipment that they could buy up cheap and expand into they could also um afford at this point to get some very highly skilled uh workers to come in and basically work for them so while the rest of the economy suffered Krueger Intergalactic actually prospered at this time and kept growing and became a more
- 00:12:21
and more respectable name now remember again it's it's still military classified at this time so no new people are are coming on in until uh 2751 when the military finally decides to get rid of the military classification system for Magnus and let people kind of enter now remember at the beginning when I told you that Magnus even though it was kind of in the center of things was still considered a frontier system well this is part of the reason why even though it was discovered 450 plus years ago uh it really had its land rush its first chance for the common citizens and civilians of the uee to come flooding in in 2751 so in that regard that that's how the frontier Spirit here has has kind of persisted in this system now when they
- 00:13:09
open up the system and people finally start coming in it's um it's not necessarily it it becomes a bit more Rough and Tumble people are are rushing in to to get land there's not a lot of natural industry there so people have to be creative as to how to generate their income um this unfortunately became a problem for Krueger Intergalactic because they quickly realized as piracy as Outlaws as illegal activity increased in the system that they were systematically spending more and more with each Budget on Merc protecting their shipments leaving the system and that was starting to to to draw a concern um eventually uh in 2785 a Krueger shipment uh of uh vital
- 00:13:58
component that was intended for RSI gets hijacked in the system and it causes a major disruption to rsi's production supply chain this is this is bad business all around because uh not only did they have to remake the part but it just kind of like throws a cog and everything and it makes RSI realize that they need to diversify their their production um facilities so this wouldn't happen again and it just it becomes such an issue that uh the one thing that the magnetism could be proud of Krueger Intergalactic they finally decide they need to move and they pick up and they go to the castra system uh because there was plenty of cheap land there and it it was it was great supply routes and it was just safer in general so once again uh come 2785 all of a sudden there's even less about uh boria in the Magnus system
- 00:14:48
Magnus system to be to be proud about now uh this kind of malaise went on for for a while but again this is a very resilient Blue Collar Industrial Planet that's kind of what it's always been and out of the ashes came this this little company that was fighting for a a basically the chance for a military contract and that company was one called drank a Drake interplanetary and what they had was a an idea for a ship that could be highly uh modifiable and modular so that it could be easy to repair and cheap to make and would be perfect for for the U unfortunately uh that ship the cutless which is getting a revamp by Josh Coons right now and is looking fantastic uh
- 00:15:37
that ship did not win the military um contract it instead went to uh went to a ship which is basically all but been forgotten since then and uh it is now the cutless was then uh basically changed and uh kind of directed towards the civilian Market uh once again uh the shipyard leine K Galactic leine left a lot of skilled workers left a lot of Machinery left a lot of like uh production spaces there and available which uh Drake interplanetary has since moved in and taken over and turned into the the company you know so well that that makes the catapillar that makes the cutless that makes the buccaneer a lot of these uh these great ships some that you can even already fly uh when you go to uh Port alar um so it is still the the H uh the home of Drake
- 00:16:27
interplanetary um stuff has gotten better the the them bringing the industry there has has has definitely improved kind of stuff within the system but it's still far from I would say safe um the the capital of boria is a town called Newcastle but um people aren't allowed to land at Newcastle right now because of an attempted assassination of the governor's Council there uh this happened uh a few years ago and uh ever since that uh that incursion they've decided it's better to direct uh all spacebound traffic to Odessa which is where Drake interplanetary and ker Galactic um are well were were headquartered or or where they saw their their main uh uh their main headquarters be uh just
- 00:17:16
an also fun little interesting note uh the speaker of the UE Senate uh Marshall madreal is uh from borea here in the Magnus system as is the uh famed musician who disappeared um uh gal Dugan was also first born here on the the Bor on boria in the Magnus system so uh there you go there is a quick uh introduction to the Magnus system again a three three Planet system here with the most of the main action Happening Here on boria very important part of the Empire that this is located right on some main trade routes between uh Saul and the Terra system and uh it's not not the best place to visit if you're not careful so just keep that in mind if you feel like going to visit the Drake
